Arteta set target
By David Maddock 12/01/2008

Mikel Arteta has been warned he must get back to basics to fulfil his destiny as Everton's saviour.

Speaking ahead of the visit of Manchester City, Goodison boss David Moyes said: "Maybe there has been an element of Mikel trying too hard to live up to his reputation this season. He has been in and out a little.

"He is the kind of player we will need during the second half of the season - we need him to become a catalyst.

"Perhaps he's been a little too elaborate, but we all know what he can do, and he has just got to get down to working hard, and trying to find his best form for what is to come.

"He has great ability and to that he has added the work rate of British players after performing in the Premier League, and that is why I say he is a bit special. But maybe he needs to remember that and settle down. He's an important player, and we have missed him in recent weeks."

Moyes believes that the midfielder has the potential to become one of the best players in the Premier League, and is looking to the Spaniard to return from a three-game suspension to show what he is made of.

"Last season we asked him to add goals to his game and he did that. This season hasn't been so good, he only has one from open play, and he knows that is an area that he should be looking to improve," Moyes said.

"He has a big part to play over the second part of the season, because he is a very influential player. He knows he can step up, and we are looking for him to do that."

Moyes welcomed Manuel Fernandes back to Goodison yesterday, after the Valencia midfielder agreed a six-month loan period.

Think moyes is right, He has been a little in an out this season. An pretty awful from dead ball situations.

Still a worl class player thou.........(y)

He's been poor this season compared to his normal standards, funny how a kopite can laugh at Pienaar and when you state infact Pienaar has had the better season so far, they laugh it off as if no one in our team can better Arteta lol.

Hopefully when he, Pienaar and Fernandes all play in the same midfield, plus Cahill of course, the opposition won't be able to double up on any of them and he'll have plenty of space to work his magic. It was the case early in the season that if you stopped Arteta you stopped Everton, but with Pienaar settling in well, Osman doing well, Cahill a constant threat, Manny back at the club, plus of course all the striking talent we have, this isn't the case any longer.
