The last four weeks have been incredibly busy in the treatment room. I have never seen anything like it in my career. My treatment room isn't that big either so I have to fit all the players in!The trouble is, as everyone knows, the injuries have started to shift the focus from the pitch and they have been affecting the team's ability to win games because of the sheer amount of players out.
You can manage when injuries hit your squad usually but not when you have so many key players out.I can assure you though we are all working hard to get everyone back - in fact I don't go home! The medical team is incredibly dedicated here and even though we have a lot of the lads with us we are still giving them all the attention they need. At times there are four of us working with one player at a time.
The manager, of course, wants his very best players back and he wants them to be playing their best football so he is always knocking on the door checking on how we are getting on. And rightly so! The main thing to remember though is to stay calm, don't panic! I have been a physio for 14 years and you do get these periods where you are incredibly busy.I keep saying to people at the moment that you can't rush though.
There's no fast tracking with serious injuries.I have just been reading in the paper about Liverpool's injury list. Spurs are also in the back pages talking about their problems. I guess it's just the name of the game now. Here we have a variety of injuries like most teams. That's modern day football for you, it is aggressive, it is physical.Of course you get people who start to wonder if it's the training or the pitch at Finch Farm that's causing the problems because they want answers to explain the number of injuries.Sadly, it is just one of those things.
Of course you look at yourself and I have looked at everything closely. If we had ten hamstring injuries or ten sprained ankles then yes, it may be something going on in training. But as I have said these are serious injuries that are sadly just part of football now. All pitches are harder now because it makes for fantastic play! It makes our games much faster. Who wants to return to the days of playing in bogs?
The good news this week has been my team have got four of the lads back which is a massive boost. The way it's looking at the moment we should have pretty much everyone back by the end of November and I can get a day off!
