Are we going to be left behind...? Again!

I think the point is that the debt is a problem due to the draconian repayment and settlement terms. So you're right when you say it's structured and therefore income becomes the issue, but only because the income isn't sufficient to service the terms of the debt without incurring penalties/high interest. Therefore, an extra £40m might go on debt not because our debt is unusually high but because paying it off would release more potential from future income.

'Draconian' terms is an interesting way of putting it. The point is of course that very few football clubs are run debt free, and while some debts may be at preferential terms because of very rich owner/fans(the guy at Stoke for example), most clubs rely on a level of debt structured to fit in with their ability to repay. The myth that other clubs get everything at better terms than Everton is another perpetuated by the usual suspects. We do not have an owner who is in the same league financially as the chairman at Stoke, and not many can compare financially with Sheik Mansoor, Abramovich, even the Glazers, whose financial clout just enables them to borrow more. If (I hope when) we get multi billionaire owners you can be sure that Evertons debt will rise to the levels of City, United, and Chelsea. In the business of football all debt is relative. Really, we need a dramatic increase in income simply so that we can borrow more...enough to give us a chance in the market against the really big money clubs in the Prem.

Hate all this talk about debts and spreadsheets, ruined the game for me. I do admire those who are into this side of stuff but I cant be arsed cos it miserable reading.

Couldn't agree more...much prefer the excitement of the actual game. Unfortunately the internet has meant that stuff gets discussed more than it ever did in the pub, and all of a sudden everyone can pretend to be an expert. TRuth is, all we supporters can do is speculate, and its easy to turn speculation into hearsay, into rumour, into fact and into the utterings of an 'expert'. Its ALL about opinion, or should be.

And that's the key point here. Plus that it is likely that the extra money will be spent on players' wages and their agent's fees.

The extra money OVER TIME might end up being swallowed up by wages etc... but that won't happen immediately. This summer (and possibly next, before all these new deals are negotiated) there should be substantially more money for us (and yes, the other teams) to spend on transfers.

We just have to hope that 1) our board permits the manager to spend our share and 2) Martinez is able to keep spending it better than the clubs around us, just like Moyes used to with what little money we had.

No doubt, its massive. Below is the previous tv deals, as you will see we had a big jump in money from the 2007-2010 deal. We had 2 summers of spending money from that deal, then it was sell to buy, before the firesale when the likes of Arteta and Yak was sold to appease the banks.

TV deal will mean bigger bridging loans, and paydays for the players and agents.

2001-2004: BSkyB, 110 games, £1.2bn, £3.64m per game

2004-2007: BSkyB, 138 games, £1.024bn, £2.47m per game

2007-2010: BSkyB/Setanta, 138 games, £1.706bn, £4.12m per game

2010-2013: BSkyB/ESPN 138 games, £1.782bn, £4.3m per game

2013-2016: BSkyB/BT 154 games, £3.018bn, £6.53m per game

And that doesn't take into account the overseas rights, which have also skyrocketed enormously.

On the contrary our wage bill whatever happens with new signings will be lower this year imo e.g. savings of notable saving rates are DM wages and backroom staff - PN wages - JH { more likely to leave wages & income from transfer} and if the inevitable Felli transfer takes place he is also a high wage earner - leaving Roberto to get players in on lower transfer fees and lower wage structure and do not forget we have had sky monies & never spent much last January!

Good point on the wage bill, Moyes (minus Martinez wage)/Heitinga/Neville would be about £120k per week off it already.

For the last number of years we have had threads of this sort, the only thing that changes is the name of the clubs that are going to leave us trailing in their wake.

It's not that long ago that we were told that we were going to be left behind by Birmingham.Stoke is a perennial as is Sunderland.

It is an argument which has proved to be fruitless and in the middle of June is even more than ever pointless.

It's a valid point , but why did most blues expect a higher level replacement Manager than Martinez -DM always struggled under BK & the Board with the debt and his transfer budget - the selling of Finch farm DM & PN higher wages will help along with the extra Sky income - this is were Roberto has to make the right choices in the transfer market as the squad needs 2-5 players to bolster it!
