I've got family from Tipton and the Tipton Baggies call wolves folk Dingles and the city Dingleeville. They're a special lot though. Sutton Coldfield is a bit more upmarket, so maybe the humour is more sophisticated?

It probably is mush but I live about 15 minutes away from Tipton (which really is a strange place).

I think it’s a shame that people get offended by everything now, Apu is a beloved character and I don’t see anything wrong with what the Simpsons have done. It’s supposed to be a light hearted cartoon. I don’t think Apu is a negative character at all. You could perhaps argue that the simpsons should have more Asian characters and have more characters that reflect the diversity of America, but there are actually many small towns across America that are not that ethnically and culturally diverse

'Stereotypes' aside, Apu is a fantastic character. I'd personally file this one under 'PC gone mad' if I'm being totally honest.

To play devil's advocate to a certain extent, that's part of the point isn't it? if a show from the 70's, lets say 'til death do us part', still ran today and alf garnett still referred to black people in the same language he used then, would that be okay? It was okay back then, society moves forward, what was once acceptable in society a few years ago isn't now, that can be a progressive thing no?
