Player Valuation: £60m
A FORMER Everton charity boss was jailed for 18 months for stealing thousands of pounds from its accounts.
Graham Lewis, 44, showed no emotion as he was locked up for plundering £5,000 from Everton In The Community (EiC) while he was the Chief Executive.
Recorder James Rowley QC said he had no choice but to jail the married dad-of-two for the “significant breach of trust”.
He said: “Stealing from a charity is stealing from those in need.
“As Chief Executive, he was the very pinnacle of the organisation and someone whose conduct, by virtue of his position, must be beyond reproach because success or failure depended heavily upon him as an individual.
“This was not a theft by a low-ranking individual who succumbed to temptation.”
Lewis, of Immingham Drive, Garston, always denied the offence saying the cash had been provided by Manchester Metropolitan university to train his staff in research techniques so they could assess the success of a project in Shanghai, China.
But Liverpool crown court jurors unanimously rejected his defence as a lie.
They convicted him after hearing from the charity’s finance clerk Clare Radford, who said Lewis had “duped” her into cashing a £5,000 cheque.
Former Everton FC charity chief executive jailed for stealing £5,000 from accounts

A FORMER charity chief executive convicted of stealing thousands of pounds from its funds was jailed last night.
Graham Lewis, 44, showed no reaction as he was put behind bars for 18 months for plundering £5,000 from Everton in the Community (EiC) while he was in charge.
Recorder James Rowley, QC, said he had no choice but to jail father-of-two Lewis, who was earning about £50,000-a-year, for depriving those less fortunate than himself
He said: “Stealing from a charity is stealing from those in need.
“As chief executive, he was the very pinnacle of the organisation and someone whose conduct, by virtue of his position, must be beyond reproach because success or failure depended heavily upon him as an individual.”
Married Lewis, of Immingham Drive, Garston, denied the offence. He said the cash, provided by Manchester Metropolitan University, was to be used to train his staff in research techniques so they could assess the success of a project in Shanghai, China.
But Liverpool Crown Court jurors unanimously rejected his defence.
They convicted him after hearing from the charity’s finance clerk, Clare Radford, who said Lewis had “duped” her into cashing a £5,000 cheque. She described handing Lewis a brown envelope stuffed with £20 notes on April 30, 2008.
