It was a Saturday morning ITV TV show with no annoying presenters and no playback while pretending to perform live, unlike Top of The Pops. There was no presenter, just music videos and an operating system style graphic thingy that would appear during a video giving trivia and tour dates. This was later replaced in its final days with just below screen captions.
Although it will always be remembered as the ITV Chart Show, it was originally a Channel 4 show in 1984-ish, before it went to ITV in about 1987 and ended in 1998, before CD:UK took its slot and music on terrestrial TV went down the pan ever since.
The only snag was when they skipped a song you liked, they played a terrible one!???. They often played it all the way through!.
It was like this….
*Clunk-clunk-wwwwoooohhhhoooo!!!!*
“Oh love this!!…… oh darn!, they skipped it!”
*Clunk-clunk-wwwwoooohhhhoooo!!!!*
“Oh god, this tripe!!!!….” (“PLAY” comes up at the bottom of the screen)…. Oh darn!!, they had to didn’t they!?”.
That was the only drawback. It was made up for as it allowed me to discover a lot of obscure bands, and they had specialist charts alongside the main one. TOTP was just the main one, while The ITV Chart Show went further. If the song didn’t have a music video, they would put a random picture up like a log fire burning…. So very 90s!.
Sometimes I hate being 35, always being reminded of my age and what my work team will do for me when I turn 40, but when I’m reminded of TV shows like this, I feel glad I was born in a year that I was old enough to watch TV when it was quality and remember it.
A 1990 indie chart ^^, I THINK they used a different indie chart from the official one and the main chart was the Network Chart (the one that included airplay from radio stations that broadcasted said chart).
Here’s an indie chart rundown from 1997, when they did those *Clunk-clunk-wwwwoooohhhhoooo!!!!* noises between video clips. Subcircus were such an underated band.
So, does anyone remember this show and have any memories of it?. ITV 4 should be repeating this, like BBC 4 are with TOTP.
