Anyone else actually think we have started the season well?

Actually we pass the ball around as good as or better than most teams - as the possession stats will tell you. We may have lost Pienaar and Arteta - two players who played football that was pleasing to the eye. But we've gained Drenthe and Coleman - two players who can run at and beat defenders which is something we were crying out for a year or two ago. As a fan you always want to see the team creating plenty of chances and scoring goals, and I'd be the first to admit that we're not doing enough of that. It seems to me that Moyes should look at other teams and the way in which they deploy their strikers and take some lessons from that. So I'm not saying that everything's perfect, but I can't go along with all this whining that the football we're playing is rubbish.

The most important thing is the results, and the situation is that the top six are well clear, they're in a league of their own, while Everton are well situated to challange for a top 10 or even a top 8 place, and are comfortably clear of the relegation places at this time. That's not a bad outcome given our desperate financial situation and the amount of selling that we've had to do in 2011. I'm sorry, but money does matter. All we have the right to expect is that the manager gets the best from his squad and that the players perform on the pitch to what they're capable of. The verdict at the moment is 'can do better' because some senior players haven't been performing; but we are getting some things right. For instance it's really important for a team lacking in firepower up front to be solid in defense, and our defensive record is one of the best in the league.
No we do not

Feels better than usual because we aren't drawing constantly. Always better to win one lose one than draw two.

There's a big ideological divide here between those happy with the manager making the most of scarce resources, and others looking for something remotely resembling entertaining and pleasing to watch football.

The thing is, and as others have noted, there's no need for that to be either/or - we can have both. But we have a manager now a decade into his job with no pressure and no impetus to do anything other than nick a point here and there and rack up 40+ points asap.

We play boring negative zombie football ,the only decent game this season was Villa at home. Am sick to death of going home and away and watching lets keep it tight and get a point football.
Was fumming after seeing Neville/Heitinga in midfield according to Moyes this was all we had !!! - any chance Davey that we could see Ross Barkley play 90mins in centre mid ?

Bolton have 11 players coming to the end of their contracts I believe.

I like to see a comparison to our positioning to the last few years at the same point in 10/11 09/10 etc

Yes so would I. And it just shows those holding Bolton up as an "example" last season were as seriously blinkered as the ones calling Moyes now.

We definitely need to replace Arteta, Pienaar and a striker at a minimum. If you want options - you've got to give the manager options.

Facht is that we need to spend some money. Whether we will or not I will leave better men to determine and indicate the likelihood of happening/not happening..

The fact a thread like this exists tells me that some supporters are happy with us being a mediocre club sinking further and further into obscurity under the current regime.

We can't keep using the 'we have no money' argument, we still have decent players who on £20k+ a week I expect to be able to pass a ball around because I know lads who play on the local parks on a saturday and sundau who have to pay for the privelege of playing that can pass a ball around better than some of our prem footballers. Its not good enough and WE as fans deserve better from our club and team.

I disagree. I'm not happy with us being mediocre, far from it. However I am happy that Moyes is doing as good a job as he can with what he has available. Unfortantly the Premier League is all about money now so we NEED money if we are to compete with the top 6, that is a a fact. So the highest we can finish is 7th and thats within our grasp still so it has to be said that Moyes again is achieving better than most of his counterparts in the league in terms of a realistic league position for their club.

THIS. This and THIS again.

Go and march up and down Sheffield and tell all the Wednesday and United supporters how mediocre we are. Football is far bigger than Sky1992.

It's all relative though isn't it?

Surely you can't be suggesting we should be happy just because we aren't in League One?

Existence alone isn't enough to keep fans satisfied and I most on here would like to see us succeed at something and if that can't be winning trophies it should at the very least be us playing some good, exciting football.

I'm saying this whole mentality flying around that "mediocrity" is anywhere from 5th down smacks of arrogance to me. When did Evertonians acquire the sense of entitlement we've lampooned our rivals for over the years?

Although the op has made some good points we have NOT started the season well. Newcastle have started the season well.

Have we started the season badly?? Probably not. We were the seventh best team last year IMO. We have lost 4/5 players from that squad, where should that leave us? The fact 2 of those players made our team tick means depending on injurys and form we should be finishing between 7th - 10th. Were currently sitting 10th and I think alot of fans our unrealistic about the capabilities of our team blaming the manager.

For the record I still think well finish comfortably in the top 10, probably 8th.

Let's hope for some reinforcements in Jan which our much needed and will help moyes do his job.

Cheer up... When has moyes ever let us down before?

I suppose it could be called arrogance, but that's what happens when you've been a successful team especially one with a history like ours.

What's more I don't think anyone is saying anything less than fifth is 'mediocrity' people's main concerns seem to be the quality of football that is being played and still not getting us results.

Surely, it's not arrogant to desire an entertaining style of football and wins against teams who are less established in the premier league and as such traditionally 'weaker' than us?

Desire, yes. Demand? Refusing to attend matches until your demands are met? Stinks to me mate.

People go to football matches to be entertained and if they aren't being entertained it's only natural that they will nop longer go.

It's not some sort of negotiation or something people just lose interest when something is dull.

I personally go to every game I can get to, but it is hard to justify the expense with some of the stuff that's been on show this season. That said being at games I get a chance to voice my displeasure by shouting crude criticisms of Moyes' tactics and changes.
