Why not (and I think this came from a Tory MP, for God's sake) allow people a setting to block anyone who has not provided ID? So if you want racist fascist incel lizard banter, fill yer boots. But others can block it.

"And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart"

Seeing how it came out this morning that Facebook fired fifty employees for improperly accessing data, mostly men looking to stalk or e-stalk women, we obviously can't trust the social media companies with real personal data.

We can't trust the government with our social media profiles being linked to real data either, or they'll muzzle freedom of speech.

The best answer I can come up with is that we need a registry like ICANN that the social media companies cannot access, and that governments can only access via subpoena for cause such as racist abuse.

That will still cause problems, but all solutions do. My suspicion is that set of problems will be a less problematic set than the current set of problems.

Personally I think all users should have the choice to be registered or unregistered. Then as a user you could choose to not see content from unregistered people, essentially blocking them all in one go.

In an ideal world I think people would be registered, but I think unfortunately if you force it people will become more sophisticated, with fake ID's and VPN's to hide who they really are.

I think the truth is that the majority of these people can be found by the police already, even if they think they are anonymous. But there has to be stronger punishments.
