Before my time, but wouldn't it be rare for any team to have a consistently strong list of goalkeepers pre-1990 or so? Just seems like a position where standards have improved massively over time, and you used to get some really average performers turning out for all clubs. Which is why the strong keepers were so outstanding - the baseline performance was pretty ordinary.

Indeed.

...I can't imagine it was live on telly, Jeff. Funny enough, somebody else reckoned he moved early. For some reason I had it in my mind that he saved to his left but somebody earlier has posted a clip of the shoot out and it was a save to his right. To be fair it wasn't the best penalty.

I thought I also noticed their keeper doing a wobbly legged Grobelaar thing.
It was 46 years ago, Eggs - scary, isn't it? - and I don't think there were many live games on telly then, but the only reason I'm thinking it might've been is because there would've been extra time, and normal time at Tottenham and
Goodison would've ended at about the same time.

I don't think I'd have stayed in the pub long enough to see the late news, but I would've if it was on live. It doesn't
matter,but I'll probably never know.

Btw, some posters talked about Rankin playing instead of Gordon West at times and I remember Westy having very poor spells of form during the 1970-71 season and the crowd actually turning on him at times. That's why Andy got his run of games.

Steve Simmingson from Tranmere under agent
Peter Johnson!
He was a shocking expensive keeper!
All very strange,he cost 3.3m then it was only 1.He went on to have a decent career at Stoke.Sometimes it's just horses for courses.

Our most underrated keeper? Had a stormer in this game and will always remember that historical penalty shootout.

Sagar being well beyond most of us I'd put him joint 2nd in the 'all time list'
Southall
Martyn,Rankin, West. (alphabetically)

Westie was a top bloke etc, but was prone to dips in confidence and shall we say 'outbursts' hence the handbags.
Catterick was ultra fair on this - if you were doing the biz, the shirt was yours until you didn't, or got Injured.
West got injured the odd time and sometimes was dropped for poor form. Rankin replaced him and only got dropped for injury...well maybe once for mistakes (just covering the old memory there tbh)
Short version; if Rankin took Wests place he kept it...On merit...none of this Martinez moving out Robles for the returning Howard after good performances.

The extra time would've been too late for the BBC 9.00 News...so that would've been
Not the 9.00 News.
I don't see ITV being there then...anyway I'm sure I remember big BBC vans in Goodison Place
I deffo do for the Milan Game.

It was deffo on the telly that night but I don't think it was live because I missed the game and would have watched it on TV if it was on. Remember Rankin in red against Panathinaikos. A game that we could have won 5-1 any other night.

We absolutely murdered them 1-1. I remember it well.
