At Chelsea they were on a bad run in the league and three points adrift of Arsenal in fourth, a position highly unusual for the perennial trophy winners and often serious league title contenders at that time and had just suffered a damaging 3-1 defeat to Napoli in the first knock-out phase of the Champions League which was remarkably rescued by a really memorable 4-1 home win AFTER Matteo had taken over an apparently lost cause was somehow rescued.

At Spurs, like Martinez here his first season to his real credit was a largely very successful one with 72 points and only just missing out on fourth. It was his second season where it all went pear shaped...

I suppose there are some similarities here to Koemans spell with us, the first season not too bad at all and a vast improvement on our last two, but then some largely disastrous incoming transfers and a markedly poorer start only getting worse by the game

You do know the senior players who questioned his tactics where Lampard and Terry - both of whom he had dropped during that season, wasn't the first and won't be the last chelsea manager to be stabbed in the back by his players, throw in the fact he was 34 at the time and there you have a good explanation of why it went pear shaped, a poor season by chelseas standards, but he doesn't get sacked if he doesn't drop those couple of players - simple as

The similarities between his time with spurs and koemans with us - effectively stop at losing there best players and buying in a lot of terrible ones mate, Koeman was basically out at the group stage of the EL embarrassingly, AVB had won all 6 games, Koeman had us sitting in 17th, AVB had Spurs in 7th and just 5 off the eventual league winners.

At SPurs btw, it wasn't him in charge of the post Bale sale recruitment, even though subsequently the club tried to spin all but the one or two who mworked out onto him

tbf it was too many all at once that made the start to his second season so poor,

A bit like Koeman here a very encouraging big improvement in his first season was largely forgotten following a really poor transfer window, a much poorer start and damaging 6-0 and 5-0 defeats by City and Liverpool interspersed by two London derby defeats, including QPR and a defeat to West Brom

His time at Chelsea that preceded that by a bit was also largely disappointing and he left the normally title challengers adrift of even fourth place Arsenal by three points

Besides all that he was great at both clubs lol

Vertonghan and Dembele and Sigurdsson also signed by spurs when he was there mate

Not many duffers on that list , I like the way he moved on the likes of Huddleston etc.
Dont think he made many mistakes in the transfer market and some really boss signings .Erikson Lukaku Courtois have gone on to be Top Class.
Maybe he could do the same for us.

Rumours where one of the reason he wanted to leave Zenit - hence the returning to Portugal line that was fed out, was down to him being aware they where gonna be flogging off all their best players that summer - they lost both Witsel, Garay and Hulk and had a net spend of about minus 80 million or something stupid.
