And it’s LIVE..!!

The argument has never been about attendances at prem games if shown on tv at 3pm saturday, it is the effect on lower league attendances as they mostly play 3pm Saturday so no tv games allowed to detract from attendances in this core slot.

I.e. argument is if Chelsea v arsenal on tv at 3pm Saturday no one will bother going to watch mk dons v Fleetwood, they will stay at home and watch the tv game.
Interesting point, but not sure the timings have too much of an effect. Most fans of lower league teams I know will follow through thick and thin, no care foranyone else.

However, there probably is an erosion of local support to big teams more widely. I.e. fewer converts in general. Few folk I know despair of the loss of youngsters to the 'sky random number of big teams to suit marketing needs'.

So more exposure in general may harm lower league clubs.

used to get my updates from this

....I suppose it’s down to whether a live game impacts attendance. If it doesn’t then I see no issue, especially as clubs make so much money from TV companies.

Well, every game thats been broadcast live for the last 12 months has had nobody there at all. That tells its own story.....

In reality, won't anyone in that situation just go to MK Dons v Fleetwood and record the televised game to watch when they get home?

Is that really true though. If you’re invested enough to go watch fleetwood town, then the draw of a televised prem game is irrelevant?
If you support Fleetwood, you go and watch Fleetwood. No matter what, I guess. Don't think a real fan cares what other matches are on tv or not. If you like football however, with no real alliances or emotional ties with Fleetwood, but it's easy to get to, it might be a different case. Some people just prefer the comforts of sitting at home on the sofa and watch from there.

For me personal, nothing beats going to the match. I support Fortuna Sittard over here and believe me, it doesn't matter to me what matches are on tv. If Fortuna plays (and I'm allowed to travel), I'll go and watch them. Watch as many Everton matches on the tv or internet as possible, but if it intervenes with a live match from Fortuna, I'll give it a miss and will without a single doubt in my mind, opt for that live match. Nothing beats going the match with your mates. Tv will always be only a substitute.

Only times I miss a match of them (under normal circumstances), is when I come over to watch Everton live and in the flesh. Also the only club in the world, I ever made that decision for.

I think I’m right in saying that we have now had our last 38 league games televised live on one channel or another - ie an entire season.

I have to admit it’s the first time in my life I’ve seen every game, home and away including cup games live for an entire year.

So the question is, should TV continue to broadcast every Prem game after the pandemic - staggered starts and Thursday 6pm kick offs and all?

(May well be different to those outside the UK)
Wont be long until premflix or something like that.. where you'll get Every PL game for a low price I've seen £10 a month with the goal of 100 million customers world wide, that would be a billion a month over 9 months.. so currently they are getting approx 15 billion over 3 years, a streaming service would generate 27 billion over the same time.. that even leaves a few billion that could filter down the leagues. Question is would they actually get 100 million world wide subscribers?

Bob Lord is the one to blame for anyone including myself who don’t like the 3pm Saturday shut-out. Many leagues around the world show matches at their regular kick off time and day off the week, yet it don’t affect their attendances. He convinced the EFL board that showing matches at 3pm on a Saturday, would ruin “grass roots development”, he was Burnley’s chairman.

I have friends who think it’s good we have this in place, I personally don’t and it’s the only thing I’ll miss once all this Covid ends.

At my local pub in 2018, a tourist came in asking if they were showing the Liverpool - Brighton game. The barmaid told him the 3pm rule and everyone in the pub hearing me when I explained the broadcasting rule to the guy, all looked at me with faces suggesting “Pathetic isn’t it?”. It’s clearly an England/U.K. thing, as Sky Ireland can show 3pm Saturday games with a full crowd present, and if Scotland got independence those fair few years ago, they would have been able to do the same.

It shouldn't impact attendances.. theres nothing like being there in person that goes for every sport. If I had the means I'd have an Everton season ticket and fly over for every game regardless of TV or not.

Serie A games used to be 4pm U.K. time on a Sunday during the Channel 4 “Football Italia” days. Every live match there was a packed stadium and it was a full programme of matches kicking off at the same time. The matches were all live on Italian Pay TV at the same time Channel 4 broadcasted.

We must be the only league in Europe at least with such a broadcasting restriction in place.

I do miss a good old 3pm kick off maybe because I grew up and that was the norm, I could see some changes to Football on the TV after the pandemic is all settled though, They'd probably charge some nonsense prices for it though.
