Ambition now or sell on value?

Player Valuation: £5m
There are plenty of rodwell threads, while this is related, I wanted to give this it's own thread as I tHink it is a separate discussion.

During the season, the fans complain about not having ambition, no trophy, NSNO, etc. When we sell, many complain about us being a "selling club" even when we think we get value for the sale. These ideas seem to be completely at odds with each other to me. At some point, if we want to show ambition don't we have to kick on and say we are making a run for the next year or two, and it becomes about results, not future sellon value?

When we look to buy, many complain about us buying players with limited sell on value, even if they are proven assets in the league like Dempsey or in our actual squad like pienaar or donovan. Or when we look to buy we talk about players who MAY increase in value, like AJ, Holtby, or Ince but may or may not cut it in the league or make it in the team.

If we want to be a team with ambition, actually secure a trophy and not a selling club, shouldn't we be pursuing players that we KNOW will improve our squad, and not constantly build for a tommorrow that will never come?

We've got a solid academy, one of our fringe players (Barkley) may be the best in the squad one day soon, and we've picked up players like junior and Naismith for free both of whom already have sell on value.

**** sell on value.

If anything needs to be sold it should be the club. Nothing else.

Bills a boss blue though.

You need both I think. Too much short term and you've got a bleak future, too much long term and you've got a bleak present.

But Pienaar was a short term signing. If we use the Rodwell money for more I'd worry.

I actually agree that both are needed, I just think we are always on the other side, I'd like to see us try to kick on while we have this squad. I would happily take a top 4 finish and an FA cup in the next two years. I think this year we can push for one or oth of those realistically. Next year we will lose distan. Maybe Neville. Likely selling one of our top assets. Lets push for a great year this year, even if it means we have a rebuilding year or two where we are in the bottom half.

The club lives on sell on value. Without it we are screwed.

We end up with a squad of 30 year olds, when summer comes round to boost the squad we are bollocksed

I guess what I am saying is that we already have plenty of players with good sell on value (basically everyone in the team except Neville, distan, or hibbert) with baines, Fellaini, and maybe jelavic and Barkley having double digit value. The key is balance, and I think this is a year we should swing a little more toward today's value and not tomorrows. And yes, I do think that will mean in the future we will either need to sell to replenish or spend a season or two in the bottom half of the table...

It's untenable really. It's a circle that always comes back to the fact well have to sell down the line because we've no foundations

Brilliant post.

I have made my feelings clear on this issue. Buying average players, maintaining them for 3 or 4 years, selling them at a small profit and then replacing them with yet more average players will lead to nothing but treading water.

We have the third best defence in the league, a decent midfield and a top striker in Jelavic. The problem is that our right hand side is very often Championship standard, adding just one top quality right sided midfielder would make a MASSIVE difference IMO.

We also have a load of new revenue coming our way next year, which will more than make up for any loss in re-sale value, and as already stated, we have plenty of players with massive re-sale value already.

Nobody is advocating signing a player like Ginola who was totally ****ed and right at the end of his career, but the likes of Donovan could have another 4 years of TOP QUALITY football in them.

I love Landy, but 4 years is complete and utter bullcrap - and you know it.

His game is built on working hard and getting up and down that right flank quicker than the opposition, when he turns 32 his legs will go and he'll look absolutely shocking.

Get him on short-term loans, fine by me.

Bollocks. Playing top quality football for another 4 years is in no way beyond Donovan.

Look at Giggs, Scholes, even Neville FFS.

Donovan is still in peak condition, and there is absolutely **** all to suggest that he only has a maximum of two years left.

Neville is awful, and he never relied on pace in the first place.

Giggs and Scholes are purely technical players, no legs in them but they got good distribution.

And Donovan's game is solely based on pace, is it? Behave.

Neville isn't awful, only retards think he is. They're probably the same people who think Coleman is boss.
