I watched it when I was about 12 and it terrified me so much that I've never wanted to watch it again to appreciate how good it is...the thought of being alone in space with something trying to kill you is probably the worst thought ever

That's a quality pic that mate

Love the first 2 films. So totally different can't really split them. Kids asked me what my favourite films were yesterday and in the top 5 were both Alien and Aliens with Jaws, Empire Strikes Back and Philadelphia.

I'm firmly in the Aliens > Alien camp, though I think we all agree they are two very different films.

Aliens is one of those rare action films that still more than holds its own against anything made today. The stakes seem higher, and the whole thing is just one seriously badass piece of filmmaking that is probably the peak of James Cameron's career imo.

If you want to talk about clever film-making, did you know that Cameron only had 6 model aliens made? Yet with those he managed to make a film where it *felt* like they were fighting hundreds upon hundreds of the blighters. That's just as impressive as a the "less is more" aspect of the first Alien.

It looks so good because of actual sets and no CGI. If Aliens was made today it would be all green screen crap. Almost every sci-fi movie from the 80s looks better than the stuff today. Even Alien which was made on a low-mid budget looks great and the only stuff that looks dated are the computers.

I rewatched Aliens recently and changed my thoughts about Hudson. He comes across as a coward and someone who panics easily, but his actual role in the team is tech support. He is the one who runs the bypass to open the doors and is able to call up the schematics.

He is clearly intelligent as he has the most demanding job, mentally wise, compared to the others. He is not an actual marine in the truest sense and gets quite an unfair picture painted of him.

Right then it's decided. I'm watching Aliens today. Will report my views in around 3 hours

I prefer the original cinematic release to the director's cut that they push around on Bluray and DVD these days. It's tighter knit without filling in the unnecessary backstories imo.

Good point, also an essential character as he serves the same role as Lambert in the first film, he is the audience perspective I reckon, the fear, the frustration, the appeal for reason. These are the characteristics that most of the audience identified with, even subconsciously.
