Still my dad's hero to this day.
Happy Birthday to a true Everton legend
I became a Blue in '63 myself.seen Alex from 63 onwards great player but all round contribution Alan Ball
TBF never ever seen a player like Young, and Bally adorned by our fans - the Golden Vision when I first went to the game the Gladwys st end was just full of banners adorning him if he scored they went berserk - on his day he glided over the mud leaving centre halfs in their wake - his ability to out jump tall centre halfs, hang in the air a great header of the ball for people such a small centre forward - I might add Roy Vernon was a workhorse for him what a deadly partnership they were!My 80 year old Dad, who is still a passionate Evertonian, starts any discussion about any player with "Of course nobody will ever be as good as Alex Young"
Fella at the end goes flying
Always remember that Kendall volley boy did he catch it sweet, as for today's John Stones look at the centre back in John Hurst who provided the cross if Stones is half a good as the other John he will be great player!
What a team that was expecting to see Alex in it did he come on as a sub?
Fella at the end goes flying
I went to many away game on Home James the milk bus picked up in that many places before setting off -Ronnie Hodge was my favourite driver nice coaches too, I went to the old Filbert St once their fans were a bit hostile!Nice one! I was at that game. Our support was scattered around the ground that day. Most seemed on the side in the middle, but also behind the goal (2nd half), and in the stand above their 'kop' end, which is where I was. Good result, Leicester were no mugs on their own ground. If memory serves me right, I think the Grand National was on the same day & I won the sweep on the coach I went on, Home James. Happy days when you're only 15!!!

Saw it was Alex's birthday so I've signed up to share a childhood memory of him:
Where I grew up in Lydiate/Maghull we lived on the same estate as Roy Vernon. He lived in a semi owned by Everton in a street behind our house (same road as Ron Yeats). One day a friend called round saying he was going to call at Roy's to ask for his autograph. My brother and I said we wouldn't go because we'd only just called round the other week and he must be getting sick of us, but we strolled round with him and stood on the patch of grass opposite Roy's house while our mate knocked on the door. When it opened, it was Roy at the door. Then it opened further and Alex Young, our real hero, was there. Our mate shook hands with both of them and then stepped inside, the door closing behind him. We couldn't believe his luck! After a few minutes the door opened and our mate stepped out wearing Alex Young's No. 9 shirt! This was before replica shirts with numbers and names. I don't think he took that shirt off for a couple of weeks.
Alex, you gave us some great days as young Evertonians, but that simple gift to our mate was absolutely tops. Happy birthday and many of them.
My old man was and still is mates with Tony Kay and i temember Tony saying that while he (Tony) was the hardest player in that team, Alex was the dirtiest! He. Said he had a particulR trick whereby he would clip you ankle with the edge of his boot evertime you wen tnear him! He even didit to his tram mates when they played five a side! He said you would finish the day with your ankles bruised if you stayed too close to him, and that was how such a slight man survived in the era of grock center halves!![]()
