Alan Ball

My dad's all time favourite player. The total footballer who had everything he used to say. All the great midfielders of recent years, keane, scholes, Gerrard didn't compare to Ball my dad used to say.
Listening to his son jimmy talk about him, he could play anywhere. The only other footballer my dad said that was on par with ball, was Duncan Edwards. Praise indeed. Bally is still such a loss not only to everton but to football in general.

Bally was made captain when Labby got injured, Gordon West was not happy over this move , I read a book were Westy admitted over his captaincy he would not buy Bally a pint, an likewise Bally would not buy him one!- it did improve his game, but upset others as he had such a high standard, The rumours on his early exit to Arsenal were Gambling debts, but it was just HC profit margins as Bally after Mexico was at that moment a tired player!
Bally never wanted to leave, I feel HC had thought Alan Whittle was going to go on to fill his boots - as good as Whittle was he also faded away with injuries!
Bally was Mr perpetual motion - Bill Shankly stated he was glad the thorn had been removed from his side when we sold him!

Paid the balance off the Main Stand.

Signing Bally & his debut at Fulham resulted in me, then 13, sneaking out of the house early on the Saturday morning. Off to Lime Street & getting the train down to London for my first away game on my own. Watched it with the majority of the Blues following from the Hammersmith End. Scoring the goal in the 1 - 0 win immediately elevated him to hero basis (more than being in the WCF a few weeks before), alongside Alex & more than making up for the great Roy Vernon.
