Alan Ball as a manager

....I remember him saying he was giving team talks and he could see the modern players didn’t have the desire he had. He couldn’t understand that. I have no idea how he would’ve fared at Everton, but I think he’d have loved the passion and professionalism of the ‘85 team.

He talked about getting the sack and said he saw the replacement manager at the training ground before he was given the news. He wasn’t annoyed about getting the sack but he couldn’t understand the values of the man who replaced him.

Great player and a fine man.
I've heard it said of many great players that they just can't comprehend that other players don't have the quality that they had. Maybe that's also true of temperament

...and it’s a much different generation and game now. Can’t be many occupations where the man in charge is on a significantly lower salary than the people he manages.

Winning a trophy’s is what it’s all about. Never losing to your rivals the sugar on the top.
Signing kanchelskis our last world class player.
I think we can say he is one of top managers
You are entitled to your opinion twoblue, for me Joe was okay but never a top manager.

Was thinking before, as the only holy trinity member not to manage Everton, how do you think he’d have done bearing in mind he was a PL manager for a time?
Like most great players Bally fared reasonably not to his heights as a player which he was World Class - even Bobby Charlton failed at Preston North End -
Bally was special he would not like to lose a game of tiddlywinks never mind a game of football .... He had such high standards so it was brave for him to go into management......

@davek does have a point like, I'm sure for most of his managerial career Ball was mainly in relegation fights, I could be wrong, but that's how it always sounded.
He struggled saved Portsmouth once from relegation, failed on another occasion, he was never in the blues reckong to be Manager of us - The HK and Harvey partnership proved to be the best move ......
