There's a lot in the news recently about how football in this country is being run and how its moving away from the working mans game, after seeing the dortmund fans at city during the week and reading a couple of articles on german football and how it is still the fans game i was wondering what the stance was for Evertonians on the against modern football campaign, clubs owned by fans standing terraces etc.

mate the game has been moving away from the working classes since the introduction of the premier league. It's all about revenue and corporate sponsorships these days. Turnstiles only take so much money clubs are making up a lot of coin by selling corporate boxes and the likes.

It's bloody expensive to goto a football game these days if you want a few trimmings like splashing out on a beer n a burger. If you want to take your kids and have to travel it cost quite a bit of wonga these days, kits on top of that plus all the gear in the everton shops hats scarves for the kids etc. it costs coin.

All these billionaires have to try and make some of the money back somehow and joe public bless his heart can only do so much. Paying extortionate wages to the players, they earn more in a month than most in 10,20 years and people on the street just can't relate to that anymore, it's business now pure and simple. That's my view of modern day footy anyway.

I would guess that the upwards curve is similar for most clubs over that time, but as long as punters stump up the cash, then who wouldnt charge what they can get away with? The generation going to matches now caught the bug, in general from their Dads, taking us in for next for nothing. Wont be the same in 20 years or so, IMO.

Tell you what though, as a parent of a young lad 10 years or so ago, I was pretty relieved when he decided he didnt like footy, and would rather go and watch Bristol Rugby instead of Bristol City!

even rugby is trying it's hardest to play the money game these days though

True mate, and it is nowhere near as popular as footie, otherwise it would have the cash/leverage to get the cash that footie does. At least I could take me lad to see a decent standard of Rugby at Bristol, (PL at the time), rather than sit with the dolts that follow Bristol City! (As I had to do for 20 years or so; thanks for moving Dad!)

I totally agree with the sentiment of the original poster.

Having bring brought up watching Everton on the premise of going into the paddock after deciding on a Saturday morning to today where i plan sometimes a month ahead the part going to the match plays in my life is so different.

Even more annoying is the matches back then were much better. You felt so much more of a connection with the players and even if we win the title now i doubt it could match the atmosphere around the team in the 80s.

Still..life is all about yearning for the past. Football is no different.

Worst thing is they're happy to take our cash but the service in return is ****e, missed 60 mins of footy to the incompetence of Everton and Leeds

The only thing that could have an impact unfortunately is a boycott, but i know for a fact me and many other Evertonians will not support it as the team don't deserve it. Many people suggest wage cap but i can only see that still being at the £110k+ per week mark.

To be honest there is now so much money from TV rights that even if the fans stopped going the clubs would continue and the wages would stay high. The fact that everyone is staying at home paying for their sky/ESPN coverage would probably justify an even higher payment for football..
Its sad but the fan is now an almost irrelevant commodity and most references to its for the fans, or its the fans that matter seems very hollow and very distant to the days before the Premiership.. Its lost its heart but in its place is a big bag of cash so we can buy average players for more than most clubs in Europe annual turnover.
Of course if we won the league it would be tops, the romance lives on and nothing about football has changed and everything is exactly how it should be :)

I always thought that fans were now a very small part of clubs. How wrong could I have been. The blood of clubs are the fans. Sure they make a lot of cash from tv and sponsors nowadays but without the fans a club is nothing. Would sponsors pay money if no fans went. No. Would tv pay the money if nobody watched it? No. Maybe our money through the turnstiles is a smaller percentage nowadays but without fans there is no club.
It's high time that clubs start rewarding fans who spend a a pretty big percentage of their income following their team with the money that's now generated. Was a breath of fresh air to see the Dortmund fans midweek against ****ty. Maybe the German league is a footprint that the whole of Europe should be made to take.
