Academy Failure?

Just heard this on BT Sport from Jake Humphrey and Joe Cole;

"2 players in 5 years from the academy have got in this team. That's dreadful from a club in this city. It stinks of short term planning"

Two things then, is this correct?

And given the success of the academy in winning their leagues etc, what's going wrong?

....the FA Youth Cup is always a massive indicator for me and it’s been a long time since we got to the latter stages, indeed we went out early again last week. I’m also concerned with the number of ex-players on the coaching staff, much too romantic, much too sentimental.

i think there has been a shift in strategy, buying talented youngsters (DCL, Holgate, Lookman, Stones, Adeniran, Bowler, Gibson et al) rather than relying on bringing local lads through.

Other factors come into play, you rarely see local lads playing in streets these days (Rooney perhaps the last of the Street footballers); reluctance to blood youngsters with PL points so precious; the concentration of age restricted football as opposed to the old Central League where youngsters played with and against established professionals.

Far from it our ability to send anyone decent on loan e.g. johnJoe Kennedy needed now out on loan with Stuttgart is playing that well they want to sign him - our youngsters just don't get a chance imo win two titles then the teams get dismantled........Unsworth keeps on producing winning teams for his players to be sent on loan .....our club is failing in this respect you could not ask him for more success he is getting.....

We don't have an environment where it's okay to take risks in playing youngsters. An Everton manager's position is very precarious these days and a knee jerk fan base who couldn't care less about development in place of a 'winning fix'.

You have to look at the whole situation before condemning Unsworth.

Only recently mate.

More often than not in those 5 years the season has been a write off early on with sod all to play for.

Another systemic failure from the club - nothing much since the class of 98 to be fair, but then again with if you were the parents of a potentially gifted footballer in which direction would you be looking to send your child to succeed ?

Poppycock!!!

We've just sacked three managers in just over two years. Four years of poor recruitment have left us a not very good squad. We can't defend for fun or score goals for fun.

The attack on some of our young players from fan base is shocking. Take young Tom Davies for making a couple of mistakes that led to goals for Leicester City. Personally, I wouldn't blame him because he was put in a very difficult position where he was outnumbered in midfield. It's always a possibility that as you get work harder you get tired quicker and this can lead to mistakes. Some of our knee jerk fan base has never kicked a ball in anger and can never ever empathise with these type of situations.

Sorry but singling out an individual when it is a holistic problem is just plain wrong. Otherwise we'll just end up in Championship football.

Under Allardyce, an Silva last season - the run in represented plenty of opportunity.

We had a number of 'dead rubber' games.

There's also the bench - give lads a chance in odd games when winning etc.

In that case, why was Allardyce sacked? So far you haven't said anything to change my mind about the insecurity of an Everton manager.

Contrary to what Allardyce says, he knows he was always interim with Silva coming in.

So your view is the academy players are good enough, but managers won't risk them?

As simple as that?

2 players in 5 years?

You have to look at the whole situation - it's not "We don't have an environment where it's okay to take risks in playing youngsters"

There's nothing unique about Everton over the last 5 years vs most clubs - in fact, I'd argue we've had more opportunity than most to 'risk' youngsters.
