That wasn't really what got us into this mess though. Guys like Doucoure, Keane, Ashley Williams etc were all known players that we still overpaid. That's the crushing part.

The point is that they weren't really 'gambles' at all though, isn't it? Not in the sense that you would normally use the word for a transfer anyway. They were all established, known quantities, that we paid market value or over for. A lot of them performed at exactly the level you would expect to perform at for us, it's just that that level wasn't actually very high.

There's no doubt that he's effective at harassing and breaking up the rhythm of opposition midfielders. If he could only win the ball and play a simple pass to someone who can actually play joined up football he'd have been worth keeping (on a far more sensible contract) but realistically he was never going to take a cut in pay. He'd be a handy signing for one of the promoted sides who'll need to dig in to stay up.

Doucoure was clearly at his best with players who...

A) Could create something out of nothing, be it a goal or assist or
B) were much faster than him.

Some of those assists were 3 yard passes into a player to hit a screamer, whilst most of his goals were off rebounds.

Thank him for those goals and assists, but the stats are very misleading
