A Season Littered with Errors

I think to some extents he raises a relevant point for this thread though. When he played for England he did look very nervous, and it could be said that one of the reasons for our failure to shut out games against the top teams is an attack of nerves. Do the players really believe that they deserve to be up the top? Do they have that level of arrogance that you perhaps need?

Possibly not, but thats why I think Moyes always tries to instill a sense of defiance into the team against he bigger teams. Until we enter that group of champions league teams then I dont think the players will ever have the same level of arrogance as them.

You only have to look at how confident, cocky even, our football gets when we're on a run and then play a team smaller than us.

For me lescott has been our player of the season so far and for the 2nd goal he was waiting for howard to come and get the ball.

Thats no excuse. If he hasn't learnt by now that Howard isn't keen on coming for balls he should of done. Any coach will tell you that as a defender if there is no shout from the keeper you deal with the ball.

To stand still and allow SWP to outjump you is a schoolboy error.

It was a schoolboy error just like when he gave the ball away against (cant remember who but one of our early european games this year) in his own box and they scored.

Its lack of concentration. Hopefully he will mature out of it, and luckily for him at the moment he is playing so damn well the rest of the time he gets away with it.

I'm not purely having a go at him, i love the guy and would have him pretty much first choice in defence every time, but its a side of his game i'd like to see him get rid of.

Are you joking me?! Lescott (apart from that mistake) was absolutely world class. In fact im not going to say anymore because that must be a joke.

Mick, its typical knee jerk reaction. Lescott scored an own goal and he missed a chance late on. So all the good work prior to that his discounted and he must be [Poor language removed]. Its pathetic.

I don,t agree howard should have come the ball was about 7 yards out and it stayed in the air for ages it was howards ball.

Anything that is in the 6 yard box is the keepers ball. Eradicate these stupid errors, get a decent defensive midfielder and I think we can seriously consider a challenge.

Yes Howard by all rights should of come and claimed it. But he didn't so Lescott should of stepped up and dealt with it. To stand there and wait for your keeper to claim when there is no shout because you thought he would come and claim it isn't an acceptable excuse.

Howard in the past few games hasn't been himself. Perhaps he's depending on his back four to much. He needs to take charge. I don't blame Lescott for that game I blame our midfield they just had a depressing game against a 10-man depleted side. I know how Davey feels. GUTWRENCHED.

I think lescott was surprised howard did,nt come and froze but whichever way you look at it they should not have scored

Who's arsed, its happened and we are still in tie for the second leg under the floodlights at Goodison.

Lescott and Howard have been two our best players this year and won us loads of points.

Blame Yakubu instead, just because.

The annoying thing is that non-Evertonians think that about Lescott. In the paper at the moment they have a 'Capello watch' thing where they highlight the English players in each match. Last night they gave Lescott 2/5, along with comments such as 'looked out of his depth for England and did nothing to change minds last night'. It had me tearing my hair out as defensively he was a rock, an absolute rock. That they gave Joe Cole a better mark compounded my rage.

Football 365 thinks very differently:

They have Lescott rated very high.

Personally not keen playing what amounts to 3 CBs with Lescot shoved to LB. Think Lecscott should have been in centre with Jags at LB. Anyway SWP climbed up Lescott's back so goal should have been disallowed. Every team makes mistakes in a season, do not think we any better or worse than others.

As for those gaols referred to where not some result from fouls not given?

It feel's like all our hard work throughout the 90 mins is let down by some bad defending.

And it always seems like its our centre backs who have a stormer and are let down by someone.

We need to cut these out.

To be honest I think the original poster as a very valid point.
For a very long time now, Everton have struggled to play for a full 90 minutes, their concentration levels somehow always seems to slip..why I dont know, but this has been going on a good 10-15 years...seems the mentality is to go out there do a good job, get the lead at half time, and then sit back and defend for their lives..in years gone by we have lost so many matches this way...but for most parts it seems sporadic when this happens. I think people only really notice it against the so called top four because it right their in your face and the media. They are improving dramtically, before moyes came, you couldnt be sure which everton side would come out at half timel, let alone at the beginning of the match.

Not sure if its a confidence thing or not, but its not just these players we have now who have these lapses in concentration..if you look back over a vast majority of teams over the years we have had, it used to be far worse..back then all that seemed to matter was Everton would only really perform when the big boys where in town, when it came to the smaller teams, they usually always switched off at some defining momemnt of the game, usually after taking the lead then switching off, and make defence errors.

Moyes has brough Everton a long from those days when you didnt have a clue which team would come out at half time, the concentration levels have improved dramatically..but as been noted by a lot of people there is still room for more improvement especially if we want to break into the top 4 and remain a force there and win the premiership.

I wont slate any players, because every time I do they end up restoring my faith in them...but more importantly we are a few more players short of a great team, maybe then concentration levels will rise a lot more.

However I would like to see moyes make more of a bigger squad, that is capable of competing on all 4 fronts..greedy me? yeps youd better believe it..but having a bigger squad means there is more competition for players...Howard Kendall assembled a team all those years ago, with a big squad, and woe betide you if you played poorly, youd loose your place and it would take you a long time to get it back again..times change of course but the philosphy is still the same, create competition for players with a big squad of great players and id bet youd see those concentration levels rise again, especially with the team winning things...this is only the start of good things to come, lets hope we have that big squad, not the small one we have now.

Well Done David Moyes! even if we dont win a thing this year, id be right behind you, you have showed us glimpses of quality of sustainability that we havent seen at Goodison in such a very very long time! COYB
