The proposed UEFA system should, in theory, benefit anyone but you’d also probably find people trying to artificially inflate their revenue figures for it. Would certainly beat PSR anyway.

What`s the point in having any system to enforce financial fair play if you come down heavy on the likes of us for one rule breach, and then when you have serial offenders like City and Chelsea just giving two fingers to financial rules and just slap them with a fine, or in the PL City case just do sod all to punish them.

I don’t mind any system that would at least allow teams to get to the top table. The revenues of Villa Newcastle us Palace etc. are unlikely to ever be more than the sky six now but we need to get to a situation where the challenger clubs can still spend every season if they have the money and aren’t forced to sell their better players to the others. Villa and Newcastle both broke into the CL displacing Liverpool United and Spurs yet are now in a position where they can’t spend despite having rich owners and are selling players to these clubs and abroad just to comply with regulations. As a result Newcastle dropped back out for a season and Villa have missed out this year.

It’s not so much the delta between spending half a billion and spending 100 mill that’s a problem. We’ve all seen how the sky six can happily waste 100s of millions and not get any better. It’s the delta between teams that can spend 100s of millions and teams that can’t spend unless they sell their best players, that’s the absolute sickener.

I’d wager Newcastle and Villa would displace a few in the CL regularly if they could spend season on season and I’d like to think we’d start moving up as well. Once it’s a free for all where everyone has a billionaire owner and can spend we might get a competitive league again.

We used to be in that big five that made the decisions of how the Premier League would be created and how we would take the bulk of the TV money from the other leagues.

And over 30 years on what does that have to do with anything? Limiting competition and consolidating wealth in a few clubs was bad then and it’s bad now.

Which would be wrong. You can’t have a competition of 20 teams that only two or three teams can win before a ball has even been kicked. In all the years of the PL only 7 teams have won it and two of those were Blackburn and Leicester with one off wins. It’s been going for over 30 years. The ‘competition’ will just eat itself if it doesn’t become more competitive. Serie A La Liga and the SPL should serve as warnings to the Prem of what happens when the gap between the haves and the have nots becomes too big. The PL has survived because it has 6 haves in their league rather than 2 but it’s no surprise that US sports are gaining in popularity in this country now where even the worse teams know they’re never far away from turning to being competitive. There’s some teams who play in the premier league who know they will most likely never ever in their entire existence win the PL. There’s other teams who know no matter how much they mess up they’ll probably pick up another one at some point soon. It shouldn’t be that way.

I'm looking forward to the introduction of a mid season split like the SPL so all the important teams get to play each other more while the lesser clubs sort out who's going down.

I honestly wish they’d just gone during the super league. We could have Liverpool v Real Madrid 6 times a season with no winners or losers (can’t have any of them ‘losing’ obviously). Then the rest of us could have got on with some real football. The entire world would then have watched a PL where every team fancied their chances, it would be the most exciting in decades.

Unfortunately those clubs realised that quickly enough and whilst they were all up in arms about that they’ve now happily moved on to pre-ordained league cup draws, ever expanding champions league format, no doubt we’ll be having games played abroad, the summer series/club World Cup will get even bigger, and like you I’m amazed we haven’t yet moved to a post season play off so that even if their cash cows finish in 6th they’ve still got a chance to win the whole thing. Second legs at Anfield and Old Trafford of course.

Blackburn won the premier league because Jack Walker pumped millions into the club.

You're right about the American sports. I get more enjoyment in recent years watching the NFL. It's a fairly level playing field with the salary cap and everything is split evenly between the teams.

You can easily go from the worst team and then getting the first pick of the draft and getting a generational talent to change your fortunes. You can't say the same about the Premier League

That's the point which Masters - interviewed by Liverpool and Manchester United before appointment - fails to get. Because he has no interest in getting it. He is their representative, their shield.

Nobody expects a perfect system. But if it was merely an unfortunate accident that the current system was imperfect, it would have just as likely snared a United or Chelsea by now as it has an Everton or Forest.

These "imperfect" rules seem to perfectly impact the non-Sky Six and nobody else.
