Just had a look at Spurs fixtures, they have a really tough two months ahead. Cant see them lasting the pace with those Thursday night Europa League games. I think we have a massive chance of 4th place but we need Deulofeu to make a huge impact starting next week at White Hart Lane.

What would people prefer 4th place or the FA CUP?

Finishing 4th could really set us up for the next few years, the money in it next year as Purslow was saying on TALKSPORT the other day is game changing.

I would prefare to win the FA cup, we need a win, its been far too long since we last had one.

As for Spurs if they didnt have to play in the EL i think they would be in a much stronger possition to go for a 4th spot, watch them start to fade and the 2 clubs without that distraction pull away

Reckon that whole post deserves a rethink....

For the last few seasons we've never had to play more than 45 or so games. Hardly unmanageable. And a constraint on our total matchday income. The Europa Cup takes us too far the other way. But why not want to play in it. If it becomes too much of a burden then play weakened sides. I'm sure Heitinga, Barkley, Duffy, Oviedo, Velios, Anichibe etc and many others would in recent years have loved to play in it to break the frustration of being sat permanently on the bench in PL games. Likewise it would have provided a chance to look at the likes of McAleny.

Would love to be in Europe next season but really our remaining fixtures aren't too bad and with a bit of luck we could push for a semi finals appearance in the fa cup can't see why we can't win both the fa cup and fourth place

The format is a bit limiting, the UEFA Cup (...now 'Europa League', dreadful name) never seems able to stand proudly as a competition in its own right, not least of all when drafting in CL dropouts but I can see the benefits for doing so, but only the losers of the final qualifying round (i.e. when we lost to Villarreal). To have such a brilliant previous season and to have generated such goodwill in qualifying for Europe even a team that throws it away deserves more than just a single playoff.

However once you're into the CL group stage that's it, you're in that competition. Letting the 3rd placed group members slip through does demean it somewhat, but then it's a raft of quality teams (normally) dropping down that can make things exciting.

With the realistic hopes of 4th fast fading, time to gear myself up for Europe's 'lesser' competition. I for one am already getting excited, European football has served up some of my favourite Everton nights and I'd love them back under any guise

I disagree about Europa cup not being worth the effort - look beyond the economics of it. It's a chance for our players to play against other European teams. That sort of experience is invaluable both for players and managers for clubs like ours.
Granted, the format definitely needs tweaking, and it shouldn't be the safety net for CL losers.

Yep. It's still a good recruitment tool.

Use it to bring in a bunch of young folks (either transfers or academy) into regular first team action. Who knows, could have another breakthrough player. Development is a tricky thing, sometimes you just have to take a chance on a player to see him flourish.

If we get Europa, I don't expect Baines, Coleman, Barkley, etc. to play much at all until the knockout stages. We have the quality to just play reserves for the group stage.

Okay UEFA is not ideal but it means for the club and the players we are competing in Europe and that is a big plus. It is farcical for some to say CL or nothing.

Lets qualify first, then debate it.

Whether we qualify for either CL or Europa - we're gonna need a bloody good summer with PLENTY of additions.

Even if we get Barry and Lukaku permanently and Deulofeu for another year we need another 2 (absolute minimum) additions I'd say if we want to save our league form from faltering.

Why choose between them? Why not both?

I dont care how it happens we need the CL to help brand the team as a premier team.

All of us on here get Everton. Once Everton touches you etc...we know this is the greatest club in the world. Now the next step is to spread the gospel.

...but that brand recognition that some of the other teams have is something that only comes with playing on the world stage. Champions League provides that for the fans and for the players. Everton becomes the destination for our hearts...and money!!!

There's no getting away from the massive difference between CL and EL, but of course I'd rather be in Europe than not at all. Europe is progress, even if the EL is nothing like the quality of the Waffa Cup back in the day. So yes, I am very keen for Man City to beat Sunderland.
