hi lhads and ghirls

seen on ssn for the last week or so talk of a 4th place play off being brought into the league.wondering how true it really is,whats the talk in the papers down your way?also do you think it would be a good idea?:D

cl 4th place playoff

don't even consider it !!!!! blatter has lost the plot altogether, whoever finishes 4th aready has to qualify so why cause yet more fixture congestion ? [Poor language removed] idea, [Poor language removed] president, send duncan down there to chicken him and slap some sense into his baldy head(y)

Don't think it is a very good idea. I think it is to cover up the fact that the top four are no longer as dominant as the rest of the league anymore. If you think of previous seasons when Liverpool or Arsenal are dominantly finishing fourth, you couldn't have seen a play-off system being brought in then, because those who finish 5-8th wouldn't be good enough to put a run together in the Champions League. However now that the clubs finishing in those positions have gotten stronger and the top four weaker, it is just a method to help out the big four, by giving them another shot at Champions League if they finish outside the top four as it is obvious that they would fall apart without the money that Champions League would bring.

If it follows the Championship system it would be 3 games.

edit.. Do you mean qualifying games for the tournament proper like when liverpool entered at the first stage?

I was just kidding mate. Just making the point that UEFA move the goalposts a lot when it suits them.

was thinking it would be quite unfair,if say the toffees finish fourth next season then get put out in the play offs.would just be our luck i suppose.if u look at it atm it would be man city, liverpool, spurs and villa do u not think all of these teams have the ability of making at least the last 16?it would only be an extra 3 games after 38 each.there is pro's and con's to the issue, personally i think it wont happen.is the opinion in england that this is just talk and it will never happen or is it seriously being considered?

The way I see it is that it's a great oppurtunity for a team like us who regularly finishes in the top six and with no injury problems will almost certainly finish in the top 7 to get that champions league place at last as we can beat anyone on our day

I agree, i think it would be a good idea, but having said that im sure if we managed 4th i would be changing my mind.

Just a though, wouldn't this allow teams to properly WANT to go for the Europa amongst other cups too? Ie. Villa dropping out last season because they wanted to try for 4th. This rule could allow them to continue in the competition whilst knowing that if they drop a position or two because of the fixture list, as long as they are in that top 7 they can have a go at getting Champions league?
