4th Place - What's it going to take?

The thing is if we are to get 4th we should rely on ourselve by beating team like Crystal Palace at home and not hoping Arsenal to drop points.

Not really, most good teams have at least one shock defeat a season. the only reason we lost tonight was because the players didn't think they had to turn up.

6 points thrown away against Sunderland and Palace at home.

We don't deserve fourth ffs.

We will get fourth. Our last 4 games are winnable if we play like we have been before we moved into fourth.

City and man utd at home we will be chomping at the bit and Southampton and hull away we can scrape another Sunderland result. It's still possible.

Arsenal beat an utter shyte west ham, they won't have an easier game than that between now and the end of the season. Stay positive lads we are just doing it the hard way. Typical everton.

'4th Place- what's it going to take?' is the title of this thread. Well, for a start we could do without the manager throwing all his principles out the window just because we were facing the mighty Palace. What happened to the balanced line-up, the requirement for team work over individual skills, and for patience when trying to work chances. Let's face it, that line up was bizarre. I'm not denying that on another day it might have worked -- but it was so out of character for a Martinez side and it makes you wonder what made RM go down this route rather than stick with the usual gameplan. Surely it wasn't just because CP have a strong and well drilled defence and he thought we needed more individual enterprise to create chances. Did he over-think on his team selection and end up confusing himself? Was he trying to appease Mirallas and Derlofeu, and the late injury to McCarthy presented him the chance to play both? Or were they already pencilled in and McCarthy's place went to McGeady? Then again, what was the reason for omitting Naismith, other than to continue his alternating between Naismith, Barkley and Osman.

Aside from a bright first 15 minutes it was clear that the balance was missing but the only HT change was to remove Delofeu. He was poor but at least he was visible, more than could be said for Mirallas, who amazingly was to be left on and the much more involved Mcgeady later taken off.

I love Bobby but this was not one of his better days, and I'm just left wondering why he changed his approach for this game.

PS - I like the passing game across the back, but could we not find an alternative way to progress the move once Distin is in possession? Too often he's left to try and do too much with the possession and he's not up to it.

Well we can start by giving Moyes and his bunch of jokers a good hiding on Sunday. We've done well to get this far with lack of depth we have so why on earth give up now?

If things don't go our way and we end up in the Europa then so be it. We embrace the competition and use it to gain experience and co-efficient points (just like Atletico have). No team will fancy a trip to Goodison and there is no reason we cant do ourselves proud.

Palace caught us cold tonight which is surprising but Martinez expected them to be a lot deeper tonight and not be so clinical on the break.

RE: Hull game.
Long and Jelavic will start against us, both are cup tied, however if they're mathematically safe, I can see the likes of Huddlestone/Livermore being rested.
The mrs is a Hull STH and from watching them a few times we have nothing to worry about. Figueroa is a real weak link, Coleman/anyone on the right will absolutely rip him to shreds. Steve Bruce doesn't seem to rotate much as their squad isn't very deep. But either way if we need 3 points to secure on last day of season we *should get them. I mean it's Hull FFS.
Hull gave us hard game at Goodison - Barry was lucky to stay on the pitch after a robust challenge and it is when Kone got his season ending injury, they are not soft. Think it was only the smart touch of Piennaar and a Barry goal that was really offside that got us the win.

At home they also beat Liverpool and gave Utd a real scare. As you say they may rest players for the FA cup but the others will be playing for a start at Wembley and some of ours will be thinking of the World cup.
