I wasn't taught anything called bidmas, I was taught to do brackets first if there were brackets, not to just randomly make them up. otherwise it's a sum and do it in order.

BIDMAS was not taught in English schools until the 90's.

To the best of my knowledge. It was to help simplify problem solving.

A sum without brackets at any point, you had to summise the whole of the sum was within a bracket. This would make most posters correct with their answer. You take the sum one number at a time, also one command at a time, in order.
