Of course its relevent, the exact same players can be a totally different team if used in a different formation.

Sure, our problems go much deeper than the formations we use but when we are struggling it becomes even more important to play a formation that gets the best out of the players in it.

To be honest mate, i think we lack the quality, i think our system is to make us more resilient to mask that fact.

We do lack the quality no doubt but with everyone fit
4-2-3-1 would be the best option.

The three behind the striker of seethe Donovan and Osman/Barkley all have the required ability. Rodwell needs to up his game in this formation tho. He needs to get forward more to support.

Would like to hear more opinions on this topic post todays game. I'm still making my mind up about what I reckon. Leaning towards this 4-2-3-1, sounds like it could work.

Didn't see the game today, but as we don't even have one decent striker, it makes more sense to pack the midfield and try to dominate possession. This is theoretically a decent team:

Howard
Coleman Jags Distin Baines
Rodwell Felli
Donovan Osman Drenthe
Saha

The key to making it work offensively is Leon Osman playing in the hole.

In that case it is relevant then right?

I don't think we are that lacking in quality so much that we need to play the defensive minded negative formations that we do.

Instead we would be better off using a more positive attacking formation to make up for the lack of quality, and that we do have the players to do so.

In the 4-2-3-1 the three players behind the striker are the most important probably.

Drenthe and Donovan are perfect for it. Osman would be the No.10 playmaker which while is not perfect long term he would be more than adequate at the mo. Long term Barkley is the guy to play there for us. And should be back up for Osman the remainder of the season learning that possistion. Or a pienaar loan could see him excel there also.
