I know horse racing isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but most of the population have a bet on the Grand National. This years race takes place this Saturday and the top 40 runners from this list will take part;

The race is a lot different than it was 10 years ago, increased prize money and a safer course has resulted in much higher quality fields. From a betting perspective, my first National wager was back in September. I try and identify horses that will be much shorter odds on the day of the race. I have 3 main selections in my portfolio:

Rathvinden @ 40-1
Rock the Kasbah @ 35-1
PairofBrownEyes @ 40-1.

The content of the race is changing, with single owners having multiple entries and Gordon Elliott training 13 of the runners. Elliott has a very strong stable, so I couldn’t help but throw small wagers at 2 of his outsiders;

Noble Endevour @ 50-1 and Monbeg Notorious @ 80-1.

Despite a short-priced favourite in Tiger Roll, I think it’s a very Open year and your granny could well pick out the winner with a pin. Some bookmakers are now going ‘non-runner no bet’ (you get your money back if your horse doesn’t run) but you will get extra place concessions ahead of the race (most will pay first 5 places, some will pay more).

Whatever you select, share it on here and remember the Aintree Festival takes place over 3 days starting this Thursday. Good luck.

The only horse race i take notice of the whole year is the Grand National,my horse won it last year and its the easy fav this year,if thats only because people have off course put there money on the horse because of that win,or its just that good as its the fav by a mile compared to usual prices when there is a leader in the betting,though been fav wont mean nothing as in the Fav a few years back fell 1st fence- i go for names around the top 10 than whats the fav etc

....Tiger Roll is a true superstar. The Grand National is a handicap, the top rated horses Cary more weight than the bottom rated horses over a 4 mile steeplechase course.

Tiger Roll not only demonstrated that capability last year, but more recently it won over hurdles (smaller fences) against speedier horses it was not supposed to beat. He then won over the cross-country course at the prestigious Cheltenham festival. His versatility and brilliance has made him very popular with the racing public, that’s why he’s favourite.

I have to say, though, that he’s a very short price for a race as difficult as this.

Good info for people like me that only take notice of the 1 race a year ;)

Tiger Roll's short price takes a big chunk out of the market and creates the each-way value for other runners, but its too late to be getting involved ante-post. Recommendation is to find a bookie paying 5 places or more and bet each-way with any horse priced 100-1 or bigger on the day of the race itself, and it should be a mathematically sound bet

William Hill have been running extra places promotions for the last few months, wouldn't be surprised to see them paying out some ridiculous number of places on the National

Tiger surely drifts on the day for on course bookies to cover the book though ?

No one can predict which way the prices will move with any confidence.
These days true price discovery happens on the betting exchanges and the bookies simply adjust their own prices to make sure they're all in line.

Whats just a par like? Any info on it @Eggs

....David Ord is a racing columnist on the Sporting Life and he says;

‘Leaving Paul Nicholls didn’t stop Silver Birch winning a National but this fellow has had only one run for trainer Jimmy Moffatt and was beaten miles into 7th in the Becher Chase. He’s 12 now and looks up against it’.
