2 up front

The obessession with formations has stopped one thing... an acceptance of lopsided formations. when they are written down, they are ALWAYS symmetrical. Barca circa 2009 played lopsided, and so did we in our good spell last year with Lennon much more tucked in than Mirallas, or Osman more tucked in than Lennon.

Joel
Coleman Stones Jags Leftback
-------------McCarthy
-----------Barkley------Cleverley
Mirallas -----------Kone
---------------Lukaku

Is kinda what I would play, with Kone much more tucked in than Mirallas/Deulofeu and Cleverley having a slightly wider role, exploiting the space left by Kone, whilst Barkley is left with all the space required in the middle of the park.
Probably not a good idea to have the goalie positioned behind the right back though.....
I appreciate what you are saying, and I think every team does play lopsided to a certain extent - not many of our attacks came down the left, which is going to happen given the personnel on that side yesterday.

But I think the formation is not that important. Just because we say McCarthy and Barry are DMs, doesn't mean that they are always sitting 10 yards in front of the centre backs.
What is more important is the style of play and the tactics. 4231 is essentially the same as 433. You could even say we play a 2413 as our fullbacks are often further forward than Barry and McCarthy, and the wide midfielders/wingers as advanced as Lukaku.

Numbers up front and different formations count for nought, if our midfield cannot succeed with a five years pass.

I loved that goal yesterday.

I remember Eamon O'Keeke punting a cross in and Imre putting the ball round the corner for Peter Eastoe to score an almost identical goal a lifetime ago ;)

I reckon if we played Kev and Del higher we could do well.

Anyone who isn't dreadful in net
Coleman Jags Stones Baines
McCarthy Clevz/Gibbo/Besic
Barkley
Kev Rom Del

433 with Ross slightly more attacking.

I said this in the matchday thread, but Lukaku cannot play as a lone striker. He's too slow and too clumsy. What he *is* is an excellent target man who can also score a fair amount of goals.
We should absolutely play two up top and find Lukaku a quick, aggressive, precise striking partner.
Agree, but you need a better midfield other than Ross Barkley in it Barry, and McCarthy = the same!
