So then, it seems like Baines could very well be the subject of a decent transfer bid or two this summer. After all, he was our player of the season - that award in itself equates to a transfer bid or two.

So, as we did with Lescott last summer - lets put a price on him. Football Manager style.

Media reports are claiming £25m - if that was the case - a £25m with all going to Moyes - would you sell? - Vote.

My tuppence worth...

Perspective. As good as a season he had - we don't have the luxury to refuse that offer. He's a left back - we could get a decent left back in, get one of the young lads in as cover and and get a new decent strike force with that amount.

Lets not arse about with this one - lets not get a titty lip out - lets not have a hangover going into a new season - lets play ball and say "He's available at this price pay it, pay it early or we'll do a Villa with Gareth Barry or a Blackpool with Charlie Adam"

No idea what I'd do. I love Bainesey but £25m could get us some players who can actually score goals. Which would be quite nice. Christ. I have no idea. Pass.

£40million initial £48million with add ons.

No, regardless how much the offer would be. His world class, his important to everton. It would be devastating to see him against us.

The thing is, where does this merry go round stop? We have a decent player and when he turns in top quality performances for a couple of seasons we sell him and bring in new players with part of the money, and then one of them is quality and they're sold to the highest bidder - and so on, and so on ad nauseum.

How do we ultimately benefit from that process?

£25 million is probably more than he's worth simply as a football player. He's worth more to Everton because he's our best and sometimes only offensive player. With Cahill playing the advanced midfield, we simply have to have a good crosser of the ball and Baines is really the only good one we have.

I'd hate to do it but for that amount I don't think we can refuse. Baines is 26 now and will likely never be worth that much again.

If Moyes would be allowed to use 80% or more of that 25m on new players, then absolutely sell Baines. If not, then absolutely not.

This reminds me of a sort of strategy that small-market baseball teams in the US have to use, because they can't generate anywhere near the same amount of money that the large-market teams can. You don't benefit, really. With some long term planning, you hope that the young players you buy develop together in time for a 1 or 2 year shot at glory, before you have to start selling off the better players. It will only happen once every 6 or so years. The key to success is having a smart management and scouting team.

No. Simply because for the money we couldn't buy better. And we haven't got a ready made Premier League experienced replacement.
