Yeah you're right. I've never been a big fan of the idea of just signing a backup anyway. At the very least anyone we brought in should be competing for a place, not just someone who gets the odd game in an emergency. I can't think of any other PL team that just has one striker who you expect to play and then back ups who would never be picked if there was another option, and yet it's pretty much become the norm for us, to the extent that people advocate us continuing to do it and see any change to it as an unnecessary extravagance.
