2025/26 Charly Alcaraz

Didn’t he play in centre mid for Southampton at times? Wouldn’t be against him playing there with KDH this weekend and play Dibling on the right, Ndiaye in the middle.

I think we have to keep Garner at right back, it’s his best position.

No chance could alcaraz hold the CM role.

Id like this but if Keane is fit it’s inevitable he comes back in and garner plays midfield

Very likely Charley stays in the side regardless

I feel he has been poor in comparison to his performances last season. He still seems to have a little bit of that maverick dust that has been coached out of everyone else and therefore I sincerely hope he gets more game time. … but with gana playing behind him to tidy up his loose plays.

…..just highlighting your ‘he’s so sloppy at times’.

The Tim Iroegbunam interview is very interesting. Asked what Moyes is like to work with, Iroegbunam says something along the lines of; ‘ he concentrates on what we do in possession and out of possession, he likes us to play but he hates it and goes mad when we give the ball away cheaply’.

I like Alcaraz too, he brings a freshness to the team but you can see why he’s a squad player.
So he likes for them to play but not really

In what way? My response isn’t supposed to be some sort of zinger put down of zat, I’m an adult who’s just putting across some opinions not basing their entire life around looking good on the internet. Alcaraz played in literally every game he was available for after joining last year so he can’t really have been said to have been ‘rusty’ and yet he looked like that last year aswell. He’s made no major impact at Southampton or juve, has no international caps at 23, was available for £12m and signed for a relegation threatened PL team and hasn’t made himself a regular starter here. I think arguing that there aren’t some fairly major weaknesses in his game at the moment is a pretty bold move at this point to be honest, but you knock yourself out saying the rest of the footballing world is wrong and it’s only you and zat who can see the matrix, don’t let me stop you.
Let's just stick to the facts and address the point that you made.

You said Alcaraz “played in literally every game he was available for after joining last year” and used that to argue he can’t be rusty or affected by irregular minutes. But the match data for 24/25 season doesn’t back that up: 5 starts, 8 sub appearances, 4 of those subs were after the 75th minute, longest consecutive starts: 2 and only 2 starts in his natural No.10 role.

That’s not a run of games by any reasonable definition. It actually supports Zat’s point: being in and out of the side, often coming on late, and being used out of position could easily make a player, rusty, cautious and lead to mistakes or sloppy passes.

Some reasoning issues in your post make your argument less convincing
  1. Appeal to authority/bandwagon – Using Southampton/Juve minutes, transfer fee, or lack of caps as proof he must have major weaknesses. Clubs make mistakes, so these things don’t settle the question about his current usage and performance.
  2. Strawman – The line about “you and Zat thinking the rest of the football world is wrong” misrepresents our point. The actual argument was simply that context and usage matter when judging mistakes.
  3. Ad hominem – Commenting on people “basing their life around looking good on the internet” doesn’t relate to Alcaraz’s performance and shifts focus away from the football discussion.
  4. Red herring – Fee, caps, previous clubs, and club status don’t address Zat’s actual argument: some of the sloppy or misplaced passes might be due to rustiness, being in and out of the side, being used out of position, and feeling frightened to make mistakes. Those factors are directly relevant to his performance this season; the broader career context isn’t.
In short, my original comment, that your argument wasn’t an overly convincing response to Zat’s argument, still stands, because the simple fact is Alcaraz never had a run of games in his best position last season. I don't think either Zat or I are saying he’s flawless, however looking at the numbers, plus inconsistent usage in his preferred position seems like a reasonable explanation for some of the errors people are noticing.
