The European Dividend

What are people’s thoughts on purposefully avoiding European qualification this year and having a real tilt at the title next season and then sacking Moyes if we don’t bring number 10 home.

If we can go from relegation being a real discussion in 7 of the last 11 years to instantly expecting Europe (without a striker) then surely next season could be our year without the distraction of Europe.

Also wondering if we do get Europe this season will the OP give a bit of leeway to the manager next season if results tail off? I personally doubt it.
If we got to Europe next season then of course there'd be no expectancy to progress further in the PL in that season. To keep competitive on all fronts would be the expectation thiugh if the manager received continued backing.

From these owners? Have you heard yourself? That won’t happen, will it? (Love the way you’re covering all of your bases)

It's really not.

This season is very unusual due to circumstances outlined.

We need to discuss that as a factor in our season.
Ah, Dave, you know full well that demanding anything above 12th is pure entitlement on your part and a campaign to undermine the Moyesiah's careful plan of moving us up the league one position a season. A man has to get to retirement age, somehow.

We got 48 points in a season we were sentenced to relegation by the PL. To not expect 55 points in a season like this when we have good players and 10 of our opponents in the PL are bogged down with two games per week is entirely reasonable.
I'm expecting more than 55 points, that is just 7 more points than last season, I'd be disappointed with less than 60 this season, we have spent considerable money over the summer, 60 is 12 points more and should be achievable.

Yes, but this season is has historic levels of English club involvement in European competition. We need to exploit that.
Agreed, I think this affected the league title campaign last year with more games being played in the Champions League, seemed to affect everyone apart from Liverpool. By the way 55 points is low balling it. We got 1.63 PPG under Moyes last season that takes us to 62 points over the season, that should be the minimum we are aiming for.

No way Moyes has got the skill or cojones to do that. However you could see a scenario where a team catches form and finishes outside European places then has a go at the title, a bit like Leicester did. It'll be interesting to see what the winning points total is this season as last seasons was lowest for nearly 30 years.

I’m not sure how anybody could purposefully avoid qualifying for Europe. Nobody, not least Everton, can pick and choose what games to win and lose.

Also, title next season. I’m all for ambition but good god, that would be beyond a miracle.

I must disagree that we are contenders for Europe this year. After 8 games we’re 12th. Whilst there’s been some promising signs, 12th place does not qualify for Europe. I think it’d be a miracle to even sneak into the conference league.

I am too. I just see 55 points and 10th place as low hanging fruit.

If we get that then I doubt grumbles will be turned into demands for change. If we get more than that then that's been a good season. If we get less than that, though, that will be a very poor season.

What I see is that the some of the same people who double downed so hard on Dyche are now trying to turn it into a binary Dyche vs Moyes play and it has resulted in them posting a whole host of excuses that they derided as irrelevant under the previous manager.

These same people told us that Everton should expect better than 13th, that playing not to win was never acceptable and that we should always be capable regardless of the player quality in our team of outclassing x or y home or away. Indeed losing at newly promoted teams was an unforgivable embarrassment that they’d never recover from etc.

Now this same lot are falling over themselves bringing out the exact same ‘excuses’ that they wouldn’t accept under Dyche.

Leeds wasn’t on Moyes because we weren’t ready for the season, the recruitment team got him players he didn’t want, there’s been a big turn over, other teams have improved, there’s gaps in the squad, can’t expect to win at City or Liverpool, effects of spending 8 years ago and board room changes. F me, the club being on the brink of liquidation wasn’t an excuse for Dyche but all this stuff is now suddenly dead important? It’s absolute hypocrisy, and even greater when the outside context has changed and instead of being in a house on fire we had over 100 mill thrown at the squad!

Never thought I’d say I actually respect @windymiller who was NSNO under Dyche and remains NSNO under Moyes. At least there’s some consistency in that but some of the mental gymnastics on here recently are unbelievable.
When did Dyche finish 13th?
