The lies don't even have to be clever or hidden. Just tell a blatant lie or claim as fact something you don't actually know

Couple days later quietly retract or delete the statement or in some cases don't bother at all, then just ignore anybody who brings it up

In the meantime huge parts of your intended audience will have it remembered as fact and use as further basis to justify the wrong direction they've taken
