The random picture thread

I saw these fancy VOLVOs in my Dublin hotel (crap hotel internet) carpark...then I spotted the not so ugly duckling hiding in plain sight.

None other than a Wankel Rotary engined RO 80

what the I hear you say, so some back ground.

lpThe NSU Ro 80 was a car ahead of its time, a sleek, rotary-powered executive sedan that stunned onlookers when it was first revealed at the 1967 Frankfurt motor show. It garnered immediate praise, won the 1968 European Car of the Year (the first German car ever to do so) and its marketing slogan – Vorsprung durch Technik (Progress through Technology) – predated Audi’s use of the same by two decades.
It should have been an unmitigated success. Instead the revolutionary NSU Ro 80 sent its maker spiralling into bankruptcy due to 1960s technology not being up to a 1990s concept
37,000 made from 1967 -77
And AUDI are still making cars on the site they got for a pittance

Did Mazda bring back the Wankel? Rumours were circling...

They did dabble with it, as did half a dozen others, but as far as I know (not much) nobody has plans to reintroduce it mainstream

Yeah, it was in the RX-8 and then they abandoned it because of bad gas mileage and burning too much oil, in this age where oil is almost as valuable as gold. I guess they're bringing it back but only in a range extender capacity, now that I've looked in to it a little.
