2025/26 Jordan Pickford

He's a fantastic shot stopper maybe atm the best in the prem ,but as I have always stated not a complete keeper who cannot control his box in the air - he flaps punches seldom catches a ball under pressure from corner or any dangerous crosses etc -
Saying that he has been working hard on that part of his game -
Then like @davek stated his kicking - he is either great at it or erratic particularly passing the ball out short with a player having an opposition player marking him tight -
He has never been a complete all round keeper, bet definitely one of three greatest shot stoppers in the Prem.
He is rightly England's no 1 keeper- plus one could argue our defence so far this season has not helped him eg - Wolves had 3 shots in 90 minutes & scored 2 - not down to Pickford definitely our defence -:plus he jade a good save to give us the win that should have been a formality at 3- 1 up!
That's like criticising Messi's heading. Pickford doesn't dominate his area like a taller keeper because he isn't a tall keeper. Neither was Southall. But just as Messi is better at dribbling than anyone in history because of his lack of height, Pickford and Southall made saves taller keepers couldn't because of their speed/athleticism.

His kicking has gone backwards for me. No idea what his thought process is with half of them. Seems to have lost control over the power.
Not going to lie think the dyche years did a number on him but he has enough accuracy to improve there. Feel like it would be even better if he had a cb next to him who is very comfortable on the ball.

Keane and tarks are not that

Big dominated his area - at one time the best keeper in the world he was world class - same height - as I stated if you read my post - our defence at moment is not functioning - IMO we need two good overlapping Full backs - & with Brathwaite missing - we look vulnerable to concede - not Pickford's fault he saves us most games - pens etc etc -

Plus Big Nev had a great defence in front of him - like Pickford he was special - The best EFC keeper IMO ever -

In my opinion as I stated Pickford is a fantastic shot stopper, & has saved us points on many many occasions & easily the best in the Prem .

Most keepers only have to make one mistake & its a goal -

I praised Pickford a lot in my initial post & you take offence ?

So you thought he was "turd" but at that time he was the England keeper? Think about that.
He was absolutely not very good for us for a period where he was the england keeper, yes, and people trollied out this 'how can he not be amazing if hes the england nr 1' argument

Ooorrrrrr, you couldn't see what other people did in a young keeper, maybe?
Based on the amount of soft goals he conceded for Everton during that early period, Im leaning more towards people viewing him through english colored glasses.

I agree he isn't a passing keeper but i think you are under selling him with his feet, he is better than a lot of keepers.

He has also not had as many problems with crosses the last two years and definitely improved his punching.

He has consistently improved on his deficiencies and that has been what has made him better and better. Maybe now with less hoofball happening we will see changes in his passing habits.
I did state that he has obviously been working on it - I watched Big Nev - Nigel Martyn - & Gordon West { a record signing from Blackpool at that time}
Those keepers Big Nev World class - Westy - all could catch the ball & his day keepers got no protection - he too was a international player for England only for the great Gordon Banks - would have racked up more caps -

Pickford is so agile - a great pen saver - the defence in front of him ATM is shaky to say the least - Big Nev at one time IMO was the best all round keeper in the world - plus the defence & team he was in were class -

Westy with a thigh injury could throw the ball accurately to the half way line - plus he had Andy Rankin a young athletic keeper pushing him for a place & one bad game & he was dropped - West won us a title as did Big Nev plus FA Cups - different eras = yes sometimes protection in those eras particularly in Westys never existed as it does today -

I agree with your post - when the team defensively & offensively gets better - Pickford will excel even more - note we are short on two very good fullbacks & one injured CH - that makes it harder for Pickford - as the keepers mentioned had great defences in front of them hence the teams they were in both won trophies ....

If Pickford ever got injured we would be in trouble for sure as no number 2 keeper for us is anywhere near his level ...

I didn't take offence. I was just disagreeing with you.

Howard was never in the class that would have allowed him to play deep into his 30s and be an asset. Martyn played very well for us until that time. He was magnificent at 38.
I think Howard was just as good as the likes of friedel and shwarzer, im a bit confused with your point there.

Yes martyn was brilliant at 38 but he knew it was time even though the club asked him to stay on.
