2025/26 Michael Keane

Interesting how when Keane plays, the defenders around him nearly always play significantly worse, isn't it? And like you say we concede more when he's plays.

It's like the old joke of a terrible driver saying they've never had a car accident but they've seen dozens in their rear view mirror.

Happy we're winning with him in the team, and fair play he's done well. Long may it continue.

But I can guarantee the rest of the defence can't wait for Branthwaite to come in and replace him
Everyone will want Branthwaite back, he’s better.

It doesn’t excuse poor play from others. If Tarkowski only plays well with Branthwaite, he should be replaced.

Is it that Tarks only plays well with Branthwaite or does Keane just make others play worse?

I strongly suspect it's the latter, but I guess we'll never really know unless we get to see O'Brien in there

Maybe it should, but dropping the captain is always a big call
Have we not been playing without our club captain for some time?

3 goals conceded in 3 games, could have been even more had Welbeck not put it goer from literally on the goal line, and were having highlight reels for a centre back?

Maybe if they were on three clean sheets in a row I could understand this but we’ve been wide open in every game.

I think the latter. Tarkowski is a red blooded centre half in the Romero mould, needs to be complemented by a CB who is a calming presence and who wants to and has the speed to cover the space he vacates when he goes chasing the ball.

I'm not sure Keane is that man.

That doesn't preclude Keane from playing well at the moment by the way, I just don't think he has the qualities to complement Tarks' game.

It's not so black and white. It's about ensuring you have a complementary set of qualities at centre back, an aggressor and a sweeper

Tarkowski would play well with, say, a Van Der Ven or a Colwill, but not a Romero or a Rudiger.

Keane isn't quick enough or so spatially aware to cover for Tarkowski when he steps out to make a tackle or a block

I think Keane would make a fine defender in a back three, but not in a two, I think you ask too much of the other CB when he's in the team. Bit like Maguire

If anyone is getting dropped for Branthwaite right now it’s Tarkowski, which is a mental statement.

But Branthwaite also needs to step up as he was horrendous in pre-season but seem to remember he started the last two seasons shaky.

I think the Wolves game we were ok, just two brain farts at the back, but the other two games we were lucky not to concede more definitely

The other thing with Keane is that he is so slow on the turn and in the sprint that he doesn't want to step up with Gana when he leaves his position to press as he is so worried about being caught out by the ball in behind. This leaves a lot of space between defense and midfield, which means that if the opposition play through the press, our centre backs have to deal with a lot of runners from midfield. I think this exposes Tarkowski.

Ancelotti noticed this and we basically dropped back to defend the six yard box when Keane was in the team so as to negate his flaws (and bring out his good qualities, which are essentially winning crosses)
