Travel thread 3.0

What were the prices like food/drink ect.
Heard a few people coming back from Turkey saying it had gone up quite a bit( not kalkan )
I am off to kos on Sunday looking forwards to that
back two weeks and then going for a week in Benalmadena.
The prices are decent, less than the UK but they have risen due to Turkish inflation.

Most restaurants take Sterling for payment and give you a really good exchange rate of 60 TYL to the pound.

I think the main thing that impressed us was the quality of the food and the service. It really was amazing.

Stick to local beer (Efes) and local wines and that keeps costs down. Cocktails and spirits I found to be expensive.

£3.50 for 500ml Local beer
£7 for a bottle of local wine
£10 for a cocktail / spirit with mixer

For a meal out, drinks and food we were paying about £22 per head

Enjoy your upcoming holidays - dead jealous here!

….off to Kos on Sunday for probably our last holiday of the year. 1st week Mrs Eggs and I, then joined by our daughter her husband and 2 kids for the 2nd week.

No sightseeing for us, we just chill in very good hotels with great food, booze, nice walks & hopefully very warm weather.
Supposed to be 30 + all week
Off to kardemena Sunday myself.
Doing nothing but beach all day in the shade , meal at night and chilling 😎
There was a festival by the church last year.
Music all the locals up dancing in a circle with there families.
The priest dragged me up into the middle of it was a brilliant moment.

…if you’re flying from Liverpool you’ll likely be on my flight so behave yourself ;)

I am flying from Liverpool 7.10 nervous flyer , earphones in trips to the toilet , seat belt on.
quite as a mouse.
Don't come alive till safely in the hotel at the other end.;)

….well, if it’s Sunday you’ll have Mrs Eggs and I for company. Last flight we went on from Speke in the beginning of the summer had to be diverted to Budapest because a woman druggy with a belly full of vodka going for her Turkey teeth kept trying to light-up a cigarette.

Turkey Teeth brigade proper put me off Turkey even though we’ve found a nice hotel out there. Hopefully the Kos bound clientele are much better, we’re sitting near the front. Breakfast in the airport, G&T en-route ;)

Last year it was full of older clientele like myself very civilised.
Odd young couples with babies
Nice people we were taking to on the plane
we are in the middle so your safe.
I know what your saving about some of those flight went to javea in Spain the other year. The flight had the benidorm crowd on board, we had a stag night from Wales on board all coked off there heads ,
what a pain in the arse some of them
Made it one uncomfortable trip.
After about 30 minutes everybody was having a go at them.
Luckily most quietend down
How the staff put up with them
i will never know.

Long weekend in London coming up in October. Will involve a footie match (England v Wales), a couple of theatre trips and probably some other stuff.

Got some days booked at the beginning of Nov too. Not sure yet about destination. Malta, Fuerteventura or Sicily the main candidates so far.

We’ve booked a villa in Italy just outside of rome for next year.

Seven of us, including two babies who will both be around eighteen months old.

They’re for two weeks so hoping the in laws take the babies off our hands for the odd day and night to head into rome or the local villages.

Think we’re staying near a place called Umbria. If anyone knows of it, any recommendations?

Not been to the other two, but loved my trip to Sicily. Great scenery, great people, great food.
We went in early November last year, had absolutely biblical rain one day, the rest of the time we were walking around in shorts

Thanks for the info mate. Yeah we were wondering about the weather in Sicily at that time. So it was mostly in the 20s you’d say?

Mainly around that, a bit cooler when the winds come in, and one day had rain the likes of which I have never seen before.

We did Taormina (very pretty town but also very expensive), Catania - not a very affluent city but does have a lot of character and Palermo - a lot nicer than I expected and sensational food everywhere for very reasonable prices.

Only disappointment was we never got to see Etna as the clouds were so low the whole time we were on the East coast.

If you decide on Sicily and are around the north coast at any point, definitely take the boat to Stromboli (island with volcano) and do the sunset trek up the peak (guide obligatory). If you are not feeling that athletic, then you can alternatively do a sunset boat tour.

Sweet, turned up to the airport here in Izmir and the Turkish Airlines check-in staff member bumped us up to an earlier flight and included overweight baggage and a very good seat into the bargain. What an absolute legend.
