If that’s the logic, then if one of our players kicks an opponent inside the box, he should keep kicking him until he has booted him outside the penalty area so it’s just a free kick.

The foul is given from where the contact ends. Doesn't quite work when kicking somebody, but if they hold your shirt from the half way line and you go over in the box, then it is indeed a pen.

Starts outside, ends inside = Penalty.
Starts inside, ends outside = Penalty.
Starts outside, ends outside with no incursion = free kick.
