2025/26 James Tarkowski

Is he fully recovered from his injury? Initially there were worries about him not being back for the start of the season, but maybe the branthwaite injury meant he had to get back quicker?

Was it last year he was playing with an injury to his back at the start of the season? As he looked out of sorts then as well.

I don’t think it's fitness related, just look how quick he gets back from corners to defend again.

He's had a bit of a shaky start
He has. Got the international break to iron those mistakes out. We've had games without proper fullbacks, we seemingly have a more attacking mindset and this can expose the defence a hit too.

I don't hold him to task about the penalty at Leeds as I think he was harshly done by and that back pass against Brighton is hopefully just a one in a million brain fart. So really he hasn't had many mistakes buy they seem to get punished so are highlighted.

Yeah but if you are getting twinges or it’s uncomfortable, it takes some of your focus away. So whilst running back from a corner is an automatic thing for a CB, overcompensating for an injury will impact on reacting as quick or shifting body position quickly if a ball gets played through etc.

I said after the Leeds game that he makes 2 or 3 bad mistakes in a season. He's now made 3 in 3 games. Don't know whether it's rustiness, playing with Keane instead of Branthwaite, poor form or the beginning of the end but hopefully he'll be working hard in the international break. I always said O'Brien and Branthwaite at centre half is the future, and if I was Moyes I'd be getting a first team and a young right back in. Tarkowski has been a rock for us, so here's hoping it's a blip.

I mentioned in the Keane thread I think his performances have been declining slightly for some time now.
It’s inevitable that at some point age begins to take its toll on everyone including professional athletes.
He is still effective but he is losing his edge a little bit.
I think next season he will need replacing.
But hopefully he will be fine for the current campaign, perhaps he needs to be managed a little this season , give his body longer to recover between games.

The issue is the way he plays means he needs to keep playing, I think a break would make it worse. We shall see. Moyes needs defensive reinforcements in any scenario so fingers crossed for the next couple of days.

Luckily we already have O’ Brien poised and ready to step in.
So it’s not a major or immediate issue for us.

Only it is because then we have no right back. Oh but Garner can step in. Yes but then we don't have a balanced midfield. Do you see where I'm going with this? We need a couple of players in, one defender and a DMC, then we'll be ok until we get injuries.

He's had a bad injury, he will be fine, has been great for us ever since he came here.
One of my favourites I'll admit.
I think it's as simple as this. He was injured for several months and it looks like he was rushed back a bit. He didn't have a full pre season. Countless professional footballers have struggled for a period after injury.

I'm confident that he will be back in point after the international break. He's had a few games to shake off the rust and this little break is ideal.

Was similarly out of sorts this time last season when partnered with Keane.

I think we can gloss over Tarks sometimes; he is a red blooded defender who often makes quite instinctive decisions - either to vacate his position or go to ground. He's never been hugely decisive on the ball and his mind can wander.

Like any player of that nature (C.F. for instance, Romero at Spurs) they really need a commanding, communicative and calming centre back partner to complement their more aggressive instincts. Branthwaite I think is good foil for Tarks. Keane, for whatever reason, is not.

Not a sleight on Keggers (although I do think his appetite for blunders is unsettling for others) but more of an observation on the impact that Branthwaite has had and will continue to have on Tarkowski. The same impact he has on Gana and Mykolenko - also not the most reliable of players, who suddenly play better with him in the team.

Not a coincidence
