Hojland away to Napoli on loan, call me mad but I would've took a punt on him on loan....?
It’s a loan + obligation for like £40m

This thread would have 20 pages less if Soucek was on a freeGareth Barry was 32 when he joined us on loan on transfer deadline day and many Evertonians were a bit Soucek’d about him joining. Similar positions too. Turned out to be a fantastic Everton player.
A Gareth Barry is exactly what we need in my opinion. Perfect down to the last detail. Great age to bring experience into the squad, prem experience to keep Moyse happy, proper solid DM who can look after the young lads and more fragile flair players. Tidy on the ball. Available on loan, and then weirdly also available on a free afterwards.Barry was a CDM and a fantastic one at that. He read the game so well he didn't need pace as long as there was an engine alongside him.
Soucek is not a DM and does not have the positional sense. Imagine watching Gareth Barry trying to play as an 8 or 10 (and in his 30s at that)![]()
They don't turn up often.A Gareth Barry is exactly what we need in my opinion. Perfect down to the last detail. Seems like lightning in a bottle that we can’t possibly replicate, but oddly all these years later still exactly what we need
Same sentiment applies thoughThis thread would have 20 pages less if Soucek was on a free
It does, and a great player as wellThey don't turn up often.
They stand out when they do.
And you'll never guess what.
Villa since youth Gareth Barry went to city for big money, and then came to us on a loan as you mention.
Does this situation remind you of anyone else recently?
I don’t support the signing of Soucek in the least, but I do think the midfield needs a big horrible see you next Tuesday. Just one that makes more sense from a financial standpoint. If he were on a free, all for it. Otherwise, get some other horrible grock in who can do the job but doesn’t look like such an albatross money wise
I do. 11th/12th.
There's steel, but not advanced up the pitch, this was always the cost of losing Doucoure. Not that he was a hatchet man, more inclined on hurting himself or a team mate if he tried, but useful as a totem to absorb some of the physicality. Maybe the midfield reduce man isn't as necessary in the age of var, but recent penalties suggest it's as much part of the problem...It does, and a great player as wellBit of a different profile player wise though.
I do feel like we need someone with a bit of hard bar steward attitude in the squad to keep opponents in check. It’s going to be very tempting for the opposition to start kicking our new collection of absolute ballers up in the air when they can’t win the ball cleanly, and even at the top levels of the game it still pays to have someone with some proper physical presence to give them pause. The ref’s not gonna protect us, we aren’t a Sky darling at the moment.
I think at least. A Ferguson, Barry, Watson, Gravesson type. Someone to give the opponents pause.
Precisely. A proper hard man. Like prime Roy Keane, except preferably not a bell endBut he’s not even a tough tackling MF
Upfront I mean for hoof ye
But we don’t need that type of player
We need a MF general
We have one.It does, and a great player as wellBit of a different profile player wise though.

Absolutely. That player ain't Soucek.A Gareth Barry is exactly what we need in my opinion. Perfect down to the last detail. Managers often bring in a favourite from a former team - ostensibly because they trust them, more often than not to give them a guy inside the dressing room as well.
Martinez brought in Kone and Alcarez.
Moyes at United brought in Fellaini as his big summer signing - a side that had been used to Cantona, Keane and Carrick.
Soucek gives him that big physical lump Moyes loves - and using him will be his default over better players or looking to get a better player.
