2025/26 Seamus Coleman

Do coaches play in the first team? Don't think so. Coleman was on the bench on Sunday and will likely play some part tonight. Everton offered him the contract, he didn't hold them to ransom. Are you just annoyed that it's 55k pw to a fella past his prime?

Just for the record, Andre Gomes was on £112k pw (£5.84m pa), Dele Alli & DCL each on £100k pw (£5.2m pa), Yerry Mina was pocketing £120k pw (£6.24m pa). Were you as outraged with them?

Coleman will cost the club c £2.86m for his last contract as a player. We have wasted far more money on many others who brought nothing to the team and certainly didn't care about the club or the fans.

Bizarre take from some on here...
That's the problem. He shouldn't be anywhere near the team, his body can't cope. He should've retired and joined the coaching team. Just because we've wasted more money on others doesn't mean we should waste money on a player who can't play any more. If this was anyone other than Coleman nobody would be defending this odd decision. He's been an incredible signing for us over the course of his career but for the past couple of years he's been largely unavailable and when he does play he is ruthlessly targeted by the opposition. I'm sure he still thinks he can make a meaningful contribution on the pitch but we can all see that he can't, the decision should have been taken out of his hands.

Haha yes you've been by the sounds of it  . Least we have running water here which is something you don't experience. Does Collymore still live in Cannock?
I'm not sure, haven't seen him about for a couple of years. I think his mom still lives here.
I've been to Redditch plenty of times when I used to be a courier. I had a regular route around Bromsgrove, which was much nicer than Redditch tho.

Doesnt matter if he doesnt play one minute this season.
He's the club captain.
He cost hardly anything
He's one of a very small group of players that kept us from the drop
Manager after manager choose to keep him in with the players.
He's Everton through and through
Yet people are worried that the club are losing out on the difference between a lower level player wage and a coach wage and all we're getting is cover and leadership in return.

but it's not anyone other than coleman, it's coleman.
And it's not like he made the choice on his own.
It was clearly down to Moyes.

Nooooo take that back!!! We Redditch fans were scrapping with the Bromsgrove fans at the train station Monday after beating them 3 - 0. They're jealous of our superior town so don't be saying things like that or you'll get the Redditch Ultras after you

Absolutely yes.

This is exactly the response I was talking about. He's been a great servant, and should absolutely have a role at the club, just not a playing role or a players salary. It's sad but he's done as a player. Outside of this club, and even within a large part of our support, this isn't a controversial opinion. If we end up relying on Seamus Coleman at RB as a consequence of injuries or suspensions we'll be in trouble. Let's hope we sign at least one RB in the next few days.

Mason Holgate was on £70k pw (£3.64m pa) and still isn't better than Coleman, even at 36. So he should've just said "ah lads, appreciate the offer, but to be honest I don't deserve it. I'll just toddle off into retirement, unless you want to give me a lower salary as a coach".

We are only getting cover if he plays. So let’s hope he does tonight, as if he can’t get a game when we have no right back and are playing a league one side - then we are looking at the sort of sentimental schmalz the club need to be moving away from.

Really not sure what Mason Holgate has to with anything. We quite rightly decided to release him.

I don't blame Coleman for taking the £2m+ contract that was laid out in front of him. Who wouldn't take that deal? I blame the club for offering it to him despite knowing that he'll hardly play. Coaches should be paid a coaches salary, not a players salary.

Good point. If he doesn't play tonight against league one opposition when, as you say, he's the only supposedly fit RB at the club then when will he play? I'm actually a little bit surprised he didn't come on for two minutes of injury time on Sunday.

Contradicting yourself there,
He should've retired and joined the coaching team
You do or don't blame him? Which is it?

My point about Holgate is that the club kept on a player on higher wedge who was significantly worse

I presume he'll play but even if he doesn't, I'm not sure moyes goes in for that sentimental Schmalz.
There's no Bill anymore and I don't see much of anyone going in for it.
Bottom line is that the club is going through the biggest change in it's history both on and off the pitch.
Maybe they thought keeping the club captain for one more season is good continuity.
There are going to be something like 10 new squad members,
And tho I love Pickford and Tark, neither have anywhere near the people/leadership skills Coleman has.
And before you say 'yeah but he could do that as a coach', no, he couldn't. He has far more sway as the most senior player than as the most junior coach.
It's a head scratcher for me that people cant see this.

OK, he should have retired but, once again, if offered £2m+ to not retire then I don't blame him for not doing so. Either way, he's no longer capable of playing PL football and hasn't been for a long time. We shouldn't have offered him a playing contract, we should have offered him a coaching role. If he wanted to keep playing, that's fine, we should have released him with our best wishes and an offer to join the coaching team at a later date.
Holgate was on a long term contract, they "kept" him because they had to, nobody else was going to take on his massive wage. Again, though, one bad decision doesn't justify another even if you think the scale of the error is different.

All valid points. But Everton have been making awful financial/contractual decisions on players for years now. This is the least offensive one. That's all I'm declaring.
