Gardener's Question Time

I tried clearing it with a rake head on an end of rope.

I did two x two hours stints and barely made a dent in it and when I went back the week after, the parts I`d cleared had grown over again !

It would take a solid week of eight hour days to clear it and seeing as it`s not even my pond, it`s just not possible, as I`ve been doing it on the sly during the evening when it`s dark.

My aim is to stock it with fish, which I`ve been doing and then start night fishing it next year.

I`ve read that the barely straw should be added early Spring, after the weed has gone in the Winter ?
Be careful, twits* with little better to do will dob you in, and you'll have the heavies turn up asking for rod licence and more.

Right, my lawn is looking a bit tired after a couple of years of basically just cutting it and no treatment.

I'm trying to decide if I should aerate, scarify and overseed in the next 3/4 weeks or just leave it until March.

However, the lawn is quite bumpy and I eventually want to buy a cylinder mower. At some stage I'm gonna have to put down a couple of tonnes of top soil and level.

Is there any point in me doing a load of maintenance to have a nice lawn early next year or will I wait until I've done the hard-scaping bit?
Your lawn I would imagine has been burnt off by drought in the UK unless you have irrigated it ?-

Do nothing until we get loads of rain you have till the end of October to weigh up if it improves with water then use a Autumn lawn feed then do your back end maintenance aerate it with a hollow tine hire machine top dress it with a good loam after scarifying it, & do a over seed with a Bents Fescue seed mixture not to much rye grass in the mixture - irrigate well when seeding if you get no rain

A cylinder mower will do a better cut & make it easier to maintain - but -

Cut next spring after maintenance - first cut use a hover mower with a light cut ..... first till it establishes ;)

It’s on private land, so licence required 👍

I had a friend who had a big mill pond full of tench fish - he had stables a multi millionaire - on day on his tractor load massive hale bales in to his horse stables - the forks on his tractor bucket implement - he accidently dropped one in his massive mill pond & 6 weeks later the water around that area went really clear so he added more to clean his pond - i used to get him cheap fish pellets off the car boot & he was made up seeing the fish etc - then one morning all the fish disappeared he found up stream an otters had arrived & was the culprit - he was upet , but he just put it down to nature ....
so if you make the pond too clear herons would have a field day seeing the fish etc - my advice would be to use the cloverleaf on the worst infected areas TBH ....its a real deal on amazon today ;)

Haven't fared too bad in terms of drought, I had seeded a small area in the summer (under duress from Mrs DBN) so I had been giving it a good watering - it's mostly moss and crab grass etc getting in.

I think I'll just give it some iron for the moss and then attack in spring. Do the levelling and take it from there. Not expecting much from next year, will do the hard yards next spring.

Nature & a lot of Cankerous growth- fascination of the plant cells w7hen the trees were young - I have come across even a bedding geranium with square stems when taking cuttings - you discard them it's a form of can er in plants the cells go haywire!
Wow Joseph! I’m impressed…

You should have been a botanist, mate. 😳

Do the hardscaping first because if you do all that work and try to level after you're gonna make patches as it has to fight through the soil.

I have a massive excavation going in the backyard for the septic system I have and it will just be top soil when it's covered so I'm going to look into Hydro seeding which is just mulch, seed, fertilizer and water sprayed on top of the soil that grows rapidly.

My favorite subject in Horticulture ;) passed City & Guilds 1 & 2 after 4 years of exams with distinction ;)
That’s good Joe… But I’m talking about writing a thesis to get your masters, and then going after your PhD by writing a 800 page dissertation on a fun topic like: ‘Studying The Mechanisms Of Plant Cell Wall Biosynthesis And Modification.’ 🤔

Dr. Joseph has a nice ring to it.
When’s that happening, mate? 😜

Oops, I`ve never had one

David Belamy was the first Botany book I read - A text to Botany he was brilliant even before he hit the TV .....

Funny you should mention Herons, I went the other night to put a few fish and there was something even worse there, a Cormorant !!!

They`re capable of completely clearing a pond out of sliver fish ( roach etc ).

It looked like it was injured, so I`m hoping that it was just there, resting up until it could fly properly.

I won`t know if it`s had all the fish off that I put in until next year, as the pond should be full of fry in the Spring if the adults haven`t been eaten.

I saw plenty of young frogs, which I took to be a good sign, as surely the Cormorant would`ve gone for them first ?

The only problem with the cloverleaf Joey, is that by my calculations, I`d need to buy 11 x 10kg tubs of the it, to properly treat the pond, which would cost me over a grand !

The only other realistic answer, would be to buy some young Grass Carp and let them munch their way through it - would be much cheaper.
