Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

PL sides can sign free agents outside the transfer window, but they can only be registered if there is a vacant spot in the 25-man squad
I know, but the longer he goes without a club and match fitness the less demand there'll be, and the longer the goes without a wage the better terms he'll be willing to take

Soucek was a decent player for what he was, but there is a terrible whiff of Moyes staying well within his conservative comfort zone AKA "he will do a job" with this. It's partly what killed him at United. Buying in Fellaini when the world was, basically, his oyster. It just smacks of a completely limited horizon.

If ever a club was crying out for a bit of fantasy, it's Everton. Look at what Grealish brought already. Look at what Ndiaye tries to bring. Yeah, we need versatility and solidity too, but Soucek is massively uninspiring when we are one Jack Grealish injury away from creative constipation.
Agree on the general point about Moyes but think that’s a bit harsh on Fellaini imho, he was also played by LVG and Mourinho at Utd, plus got a 2 year extension.

I am a bit biased with Fellaini mind, thought he was boss.

We need a player who is good enough in possession to get it off the back 4 and find balls between the lines, but out of possession can also hold their position and out tackles in. Ideally tall enough to head goal kicks away as well would be a bonus. Basically a Matic, Rodri, Casemiro, Busquets type (obviously very difficult to get ones as good as these but that type of player). We don’t need another player to chase the ball in midfield.
I don’t know why we don’t simply find Lothar Matthaus

Soucek would obviously be as a squad member. I’d rather we didn’t and went for a younger version.

I get he adds height and so on, so gives us something different if chasing a game.

If Moyes buys Soucek, one can only conclude that, with the best will in the world, he is wedded to ordinariness.

Moyes is a good manager overall, but this is my frustration with him - I feel like he needs saving from his own worst instincts and natural conservatism sometimes.

It holds him back from achieving what his overall efforts and skills deserve.

Fellaini was a fine player - but in a world of excellent players he could have bought, his purchase stank of Moyes not being smart enough to play the PR game that he needed to play at United. That's not a criminal offence in itself, but it did betray his limited horizons. Soucek would definitely do the same, without the same obvious upside in buying a good player at his peak.

I loved Felli. He was one of the best players of our lamentable 21st century. But he wouldn't have been my first signing if I was taking over at Man United...

Fellaini was magic. He was also quite far down the list - they spent all summer chasing Fabregas and other such players who weren’t available.
