Because we'll have blinked first and it's gonna be a lot closer to what they originally wanted? Or because the price of the brick going up?

Our sticking point was the sell-on fee. We wanted Southampton to come down on the initial cash payment (if the % was staying the same) or we wanted the % to come down for a bigger up front fee. Thats why we stopped speaking to them, they wouldn't budge.

If we genuinely have re-entered discussions, knowing exactly what they want and that they won’t budge, and the player is up for it, then surely even we can get it over the line quickly. If we don’t want to pay it, we have no business picking up the phone. If we offer anything other than their asking price then we really should be transfer blacklisted by all European clubs for being complete idiots.

In terms of the pressure the fee puts on him, maybe there will be more patience than usual. If he is doing the hard work and then trying to make things happen, it’s expected it won’t always come off because he’s a kid. He should get some grace. I’d be expecting more of an instant impact from Grealish given his experience and pedigree. Forget the fee until we come to sell him.
