VAR

What annoys me about VAR is.. it removes any accountability for poor decisions...Moyes spoke about how he asked the ref who said.. basically..Not my problem speak to the VAR officials. I am not sure who is making the call on the pen.. the linesman who cant the ball go over the line for a corner by a foot. The Ref looking at it face on... or VAR seeing it as many times as they want to?

The more I watch the so called 'Hand Ball' the more I think "What is the bloomin point anymore". Seriously going off the game now. I may start attending more race meetings instead.
VAR can only be used in decisions that are matter of fact.. with that in mind i dont actually mind the Palace descion at the weekend.. the rule is clear...you need to be more than 1 meter away... off sides. Ball over the line.. until we can have clear and fast rule on where the arm starts and finishes.. and some clarity for when an arm is behind the playes back its pointless using VAR...

This is Tarkowski "eaning into the ball" apparently

If we're gonna pretend the slow motion replays are a fair reflection of Tarks reflexes...
The ball is well gone and he is still upright, then he "leans"....

The analysis by Neville and carragher was as bad as you're ever gonna.....topped off with Neville questioning why the Tarks and the other Everton players had their arms behind their backs....legit think they were deliberately winding us up

VAR should be a great solution to issues like last night. The ref didn't see it, but the linesman thinks it's a handball. Fine - a potential penalty is a major incident in the game, so ask the ref to trot over and look at the screen.
Why should a decision be made by a linesman (who, from his angle, can't possibly see if Tarky's arm is extended away from his body) and a VaR official who disagrees with the referee's own comments to the player that it can't be a penalty if the arms are down by his side?

Once again, the technology isn't the problem. It's how it is applied.

The issue isnt with VAR, its with John Brooks. We have won 1 in 10 with Kavanagh as ref, and 0 in 12 with John Brooks. John Brooks hates us, and its at the statistical level where only the most insane person could say thats normal, and not concern over corruption.

The mafia would look at Brooks and quickly be searching for the money trail, but apparently PMGOL arent bothered. 6 months ago he was removed from VAR duty for an egregious offense......for 2 matches only.

Not for me. Arm to his side, a bit unsighted, and a defection. Given by the linesman who was side on and had the worst view out of everyone in the ground. Biggest shout for handball came from Keane.

I would not necessarily scrap it. I would demand that they use it correctly.

The idea of a 'backup' to ensure fairness is not a bad idea. The fact that it is being used by one of the most incompetent, and possibly corrupt, organisations in the world of sport is the problem here.

If the ref does not see it and trusts the decision then fair enough, but it just cannot be that easy in football, especially with this kind of decision. In Rugby, now and again, a ref will give a penalty, knock on, etc. simply based on the TMO in his ear. He does not need to look as he trusts that the TMO is competent enough. On the bigger issues the TMO will send it to the ref to review. There are very few issues with the TMO process, it is not perfect, but it is better for the game to have it.

This is a bigger issue that absolutely 100% should have gone to the ref. There are no ifs and buts, the ref makes the final decision and now he is looking like an incompetent buffoon because he trusted the other buffoons to make the decision for him.

If I was in control, my first port of call is to get Rugby involved, speak with them, learn from them. Get maybe retired refs directly on board to train the incompetence out of football refs.
Just scrap VAR simple as. It's ruined football completely, don't know how anyone can defend it. Deli Ali punched ball out of box and it wasn't given as a penalty. As I said on other thread, other than Clattenburgs performance most refereeing performances I've seen have been fair. Refs make wildly inconsistent decisions based on which team they're giving decisions for and against. Look at Tarkowskis goal in derby, brought to VAR just to look for any reason to disallow it. Anyone who wants VAR baffles me.

Thought I’d see what Chat GPT thought. After initially playing both sides, it said No Pen. Maybe just refer all pens to chat gpt and get rid of VAR. Reckon more people would accept that over the nobs sat in the var room.

Got it — no fence-sitting. If I’m the referee on the day, seeing that incident in real time, here’s my call:

❌ Not a penalty.

Here’s why:
  • Arm position: Tarkowski’s arms were tucked close to his body. That’s a natural position for a defender.
  • Body movement: Yes, he leans, but that’s part of an attempt to block with his torso, not to use his arm. His arm doesn’t create extra barrier space in a way that the law is supposed to punish.
  • Spirit of the law: The intent behind the handball rule is to stop defenders unfairly enlarging themselves with outstretched arms, not to punish unavoidable ricochets onto arms held naturally.
  • Consistency: If you start giving these, you’re effectively saying defenders must play with arms behind their back at all times, which makes normal defending impossible.
So my whistle stays down. Ball hit the arm, yes — but in a natural, tucked position. Play on.

The rules account for assistant referees making a decision when the referee's view is blocked. What's their point if they can't make decisions?
