VAR

It doesn't matter what level of technology the game has at this point. It doesn't matter if we get a machine that is able to look into the heart and souls of players to determin the truth about controversial calls. The refs simply have no idea what they're doing. Technology won't change that. You can't fix incompetence and the match officials in this sport are easily the most wildly incompetent morons in any sport and in any league in the world. Its unbelievable how bad they are.

I do also feel a bit tin foil hat when I wonder how it might feel helpful for the overall competetiveness of the league, to have sides like Leeds and Sunderland win on the opening weekend. All the narratives have been how long it took for a promoted side to win last season, and as a brand, how terribly that panned out with relegation battles being over by March and pretty much nothing to play for in the league on the final weekend of the season
Why are we playing our part? Going out and giving up possession and playing awful, if it's a conspiracy that means that we are a willing participant, If we go out and play well we beat them last night, we were hopeless probably the worst Everton performance since the Liverpool under 5s beat us in the FA cup a few years ago even with that it took a dodgy penalty for Leeds to win, The referees are clueless it's no more than that.

First game of the season and already on the receiving end of incompetent, baffling and corrupt decisions. I mean how can so called professionals say his arms were fine but he was leaning towards it so it was a deliberate handball but we are not giving him a card for it because it was accidental as the lad had about 0.1% time to react to the ball coming towards him at 100 mph. It wasn’t just that though was it. The officiating was so one sided, every time an Everton player was pushed to the floor the ref just ignored it and played on, blatant corners not given, even throw ins given the wrong way.

Not looking forward to another full season of this codswallop.

I genuinely believe the refs are told what result the league wants that day and they try to enforce it.

I read a article the other month about added time the top 6 all got the most added time when they were either loosing or drawing and also got the least amount of added time added when they were wining. With Chelsea being given the most time on avarage when loosing and liverpool being given the least when winning.

This really is just wwe now isnt it.

I'd scrap VAR at the earliest opportunity, and football might return to a resemblance of its old self. Non-league football interests me a lot more these days.

I would not necessarily scrap it. I would demand that they use it correctly.

The idea of a 'backup' to ensure fairness is not a bad idea. The fact that it is being used by one of the most incompetent, and possibly corrupt, organisations in the world of sport is the problem here.

If the ref does not see it and trusts the decision then fair enough, but it just cannot be that easy in football, especially with this kind of decision. In Rugby, now and again, a ref will give a penalty, knock on, etc. simply based on the TMO in his ear. He does not need to look as he trusts that the TMO is competent enough. On the bigger issues the TMO will send it to the ref to review. There are very few issues with the TMO process, it is not perfect, but it is better for the game to have it.

This is a bigger issue that absolutely 100% should have gone to the ref. There are no ifs and buts, the ref makes the final decision and now he is looking like an incompetent buffoon because he trusted the other buffoons to make the decision for him.

If I was in control, my first port of call is to get Rugby involved, speak with them, learn from them. Get maybe retired refs directly on board to train the incompetence out of football refs.

I think the pen was harsh but nowhere near a scandalous decision. There was no way VAR could overturn it really, it clearly did hit his arm and it wasn’t unavoidable by any stretch. The other way round we’d have wanted it given, 100%. The biased outrage over stuff like this doesn’t help the cause for complaining about VAR and officials because they can basically just shrug and say ‘we can’t win can we?’.

I think the problem for me though is that the way the rules currently are and the way VAR is utilised means that there is going to be inconsistency every weekend which is trash for the 'best league in the world'. I also think it's appalling that there are instances where VAR can intervene and it can't, despite some decisions they can't intervene in being more blatant than those that they can intervene with. It's a mess.
