I had the 'pleasure' of listening to the game on talk sport driving back from the in laws down south, in some ways it seemed to go as I thought, Leeds would come out flying and put us under pressure but then we'd grow into the game and hope to nick something

As it went the game seemed to be petering out after a much more even second half until the dubious pen, it's frustrating again that we are starting the season slowly and have a patched up team but I'm not knee jerking just yet, much in the the same way if we beat Brighton I'm not going to be thinking we'll be qualifying for Europe

As an aside talk sport was awful, Troy deeney absolutely hates Everton and has a big negative opinion about Pickford amongst other players, awful co commentator

Looks that way to me.
Beto was not the Beto of last season last night. It was a ‘sulky’ performance.

I think Moyes’ team selection was political. He wanted to send a clear message to the powers that be.
Keeps sending messages like last night to the powers that be he won't last too long here.

Thing is, we have 2 left backs and 2 right backs. (Forgetting quality level at this point).

We are in the perfect storm of things going wrong in terms of injuries for what is normally our best area on the pitch.

We have 2 left backs but both have got injured vs Roma.
We have 2 right backs, one of which is injured and the other is just classed as an injury himself now.
We have a CB that can do a job there but unfortunately our first choice CB has also got injured meaning both 3/4th choice CBs had to start.

You are saying we need 2 players per position and then pointing out we have 2 players in each of the positions that we are struggling for injuries in. The only position we don’t is RW.

And saying Barry isn’t good enough after like 10 mins the league is a bit unfair.
I hadn't appreciated that Aznou was injured, same for Patterson to be fair. I don't mean to say Barry isn't good enough - only to say that if Beto is getting 90 minutes then either Barry isn't ready for the PL yet, isn't completely fit, or the manager isn't convinced. As I said, he might show himself to be good enough later this season. I'm definitely not judging him yet.

As far as 2 players per position goes - the 2 LBs might be "good enough" for now, and it's just unfortunate to have them both injured. The two right backs clearly aren't good enough though. Just having 2 names to put in that position doesn't mean we have that position adequately covered.

Same for the CF position. Either Beto or Barry might be adequate for the second of those 2 CF players, but once again we are going in to another season lightweight there. Beto has his strengths, but isn't suited to playing against every type of opposition. That's not such a worry I guess, as we've just about coped with DCL as our "main" striker for a few years now, and hopefully the midfield can chip in with goals too.

No, it's not.

Make WHAT more competitive?

Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher: "Leeds were excellent in the first half. In the second half, Everton came in and nullified Leeds a little bit.

"We need the promoted teams to get off the mark and build some momentum and make it more competitive than it's been for the last two years.
That's just Carragher's words.

Maybe if he hadn't have leaned into the ball with his arm the ref might have some sympathy with this arguement.

And that’s the point. If Tarks is standing upright and the ball hits his arm then it’s a deffo no penalty. But he leans over to try and block the ball and he does it with his arm, whether he meant it or not he’s denying a goal scoring opportunity.

They should have gone to 3 at the back at half time with Mcneil and Garner the wing backs. Then put Armstrong on for Tim , the system clearly wasn't working 1st half.

Terrible result that sets up the dread/stress in fans as we should have been ready and gone for the win straight off ! Excuses, questions of penalty etc all cover the fact that Moyes hadn't players ready 🙃

Worry for me is that people talk about injuries. They're all defenders and we coped OK with that tonight. The worry for me is that we created nothing going forward in that game. Same old

Tbf I thought the defence set us up terribly to get any sort of opportunity to get our attackers into the game. Tarkowski, Keane, O'Brien, Gueye, Iroegbunam were all so poor on the ball we couldn't even develop the play into our attackers.

The worst thing is that it will be much the same players on Sunday, but we're playing a decent team rather than Leeds.

I've been looking forward to our first game at the new ground - I've not gone to any of the test events so I can savour a proper match day atmosphere on my first visit to the place. What I wasn't expecting was that we'd kick off with a worse first XI than we finished last season with. I'm even getting misty eyed about Doucoure, DCL and Harrison.

You actually think Doucoure, DCL and Harrison are better than Grealish, KDH and Barry? Baffling.

As an aside - Neville and Carragher there have us lower midtable this season with the likes of Wolves, West Ham & Brentford in trouble, along with the promoted three. Seems to be the general consensus across the footy punters from what ive been seeing.

I reckon, depending on when exactly we get our acts together, that a top half finish is very achievable.
Based on what I saw last night I wouldnt fancy us for top half. Looked no better than last season. Dewsbury hall and grealish may add something for games when we have more of the ball but we havnt scored again and really we never looked like scoring either. We have signed a left back who clearly isnt ready to play when we needed a left back who could cover mykolenko who does pick up injuries. We have no right back, we have poor cover at centre back and no pace there. We lack a right winger. We dont have anything up front either and still struggling to find out strikers.

I dont think we will go down but I dont see this team achieving anything because it lacks in too many areas. An injury to grealish or ndiaye puts us back into the same kind of problems we have had before.
