2025/26 David Moyes

He was incredibly let down by recruitment this summer

Just like every other manager we've had in recent years

Its so difficult to start well in this league with the absolutely abysmal pre seasons we have year on year. It just seems that fkr some unknown reason, the club had decided that August matches are not as important as other months.

The manager is about the only person I have complete confidence in. Everything else at the club still seems disorganised.
I wouldn't have much confidence in him on that display tonight. His tactics, his team selection, his lack of reaction to an unfolding no-show.

Of course he's been let down by the "competent professionals" running the club - but he let himself down tonight.

I dont think that starting 11 is good enough to win top flight football matches.

Absolutely woeful in defence and midfield. Relegation standard.

This is a bit contradictory, no?

Ultimately - who is primarily responsible in making sure that the playing squad is sufficiently prepared to compete on a matchday?

The manager is responsible for performance and the club is responsible for getting him the players he needs

The team he was forced to select tonight is not good enough for this club. Its not a team that can realistically win many top flight matches. The midfield and defence are not top flight level.

The manager has been let down. That's my only conclusion tonight. I fully expected a bad start after our abysmal pre season.

It was good enough to get a result at Real Madrid Leeds United.

We've spent, what, 70m since we won at Newcastle with much the same players?

Nah, sorry, not having any excuses tonight.
I dont think our recruitment so far has been particularly good. KDH and Grealish will hopefully be good players but right back and right forward were priorities and probably also a midfielder.

None of those crucial positions were signed on time and a completely unbalanced team selection was the result.

And what's the manager's role in this recruitment team?

How do we know he is not the one slowing things down?

Oh, and his comments about being disappointed by some players who didn't want to come to Everton doesn't say a whole lot for his drawing power.

He wasn't 'forced' to select that side or adopt them tactics mate. He made a bit of a pigs ear of it and that was evident really before the game had even kicked off..

I still believe that Moyes has a massive say in recruitment and I still believe he is a ditherer.
It is on Moyes to have us ready for a new season and we looked well off tonight, so off that I didn't see anything to give us optimism.

Oh, I completely agree with you. I don't think we've upgraded hugely at all.

Where I part ways with you is that I don't give the manager a free pass. That squad tonight was good enough to get some sort of result at Leeds - but look at the performance they delivered. And they looked unfit. That's not recruitment. And recruitment doesn't prevent you making half-time subs.
