It is a sad state of affairs for a paper that at different times in my younger years had the legendary Brian Glanville, David Lacey and Patrick Barclay with the magnificent Hugh McIlvanney at then sister paper, The Observer. Once they had the very best coverage going. Now they have a bunch of clowns.
Glanville's passing this year was the symbolic death-knell of football writing. To be fair, however, the old-school guys never had to contend with a media environment of 24-hour rolling news and always-on Internet.

Truth be told, it's a different world now.

When hes being slated for having ok games at right back with an empty space ahead of him all game then its time for him to move on.

He certainly was fine under Lampard and fine otherwise since then despite having injuries that repeatedly paused his development.

Certainly an avalanche of reasons why he hasnt been favoured by a vocal minority.
I think the main reason is he is just not very good.
