Merseyrail yesterday.

Back in the late 1950's I went to Goodison on the bus there and back from Edge Hill. There were some crowds of 70,000 plus and I don't remember having any trouble getting home. And not many people had cars then. It was about a 10 minute walk to the bus stop and some of them were night games.

Its not the 50's anymore and people travel from further afield by car and rail.

merseyrail certainly pulled out all the stops for the test events and they've done a good job so far however I've been using merseyrail for years and i've experienced first hand multiple occasions where they've not put enough carriages on or where trains have been cancelled or delayed

will they revert to type? i guess time will tell

We got off at James Street and they were guiding us to the Water Street exit up the ramp before the game.

Left at 90 mins and walked back to James Street and ended up getting the 17.22 to New Brighton on the way back and it was relatively busy but no major problems. Hard to gauge that one though given that a lot of people stayed in the ground.

The guy said yes the water street entrance because the wait times for big.

Ignored him and there was no one there so got a lift straight away. Other people followed us too.

I used merseyrail via Sandhills well before and during the game on Saturday (I didn't go the game) and I think they had the extra carriages on for all the trains.

Water St. aka the rat-run is normally only open Mon-Fri so that's a concession from Merseyrail . Also noticed the Stagecoach jobsworths took the unprecedented step of allowing 2 buses to board at once on Commutation Row.

Which was exactly my point. There are more modern travel options available now.
It really doesn't matter how far you're going.
And that modern option is primarily the car particularly when time is an issue for for a night match. Catching trains and buses after a days work getting home for your tea and then using public transport simply isn't an option for many. A big proportion of fans also travel from outside Merseyside and will be needed to consistently fill this venue.

Are there enough car parks around BMD to cater for those of 50 odd thousand who drive there?
How did they get on at Goodison?

We have two big football stadiums here in Melbourne and I wouldn't dream of driving to them.

Tram or train for me, though it's messy getting home after a night game

Last train ( as long as not cancelled ) is 10.54pm from Lime St. (40 miles home) Daytime matches not a problem but any midweek night matches would be a worry to get back in time. Would have less than an hour with added extra time minutes. Thinking Sandhills straight into Lime St. Car was easy at Goodison cos parked on Stanley Park. But car now probably a no no.
